花山苗圃由 Joe 与 Hazel Cook 夫妇于 1994 年创办，苗圃自上世纪 80 年代起从英国引种大花翠雀老系，逐年自育形成茎秆更壮、花朵更大、耐寒性更强的本土株系，并曾斩获英国 Delphinium Society 在加拿大颁发的仅有两块铜奖，Joe 与 Hazel 同时担任该学会海外副主席。牡丹收藏始于 2004 年，目前园内约 6000 株、超 650 个品种的活体收藏，覆盖草本、木本（树牡丹）与 Itoh 杂交三类。

产地气候与生产方式

苗圃所在 Selwyn 镇位于安大略省南部 Peterborough 县，气候属湿润大陆性冷凉气候，冬季严寒、夏季短促，特别适合耐寒牡丹与高海拔来源的大花翠雀。Joe 一家在自有土地上露地栽培，牡丹在秋季以裸根分株方式销售，大花翠雀以穴盆苗或裸根方式春季至秋季供货；苗圃同时把 12 英亩耕地改造为本土野花与高草草甸，作为蜜蜂主要蜜源与种质资源圃。

产品结构与销售方式

苗圃的主要商品可分为四条线：大花翠雀穴盆苗与裸根苗（蓝、紫、粉、双色与白色等多色系）；牡丹裸根分株苗（草本 600+ 品种、木本与 Itoh 杂交若干）；本土野花种子（涉及 Asclepias tuberosa、Liatris ligulistylis、Lobelia cardinalis、Penstemon digitalis、Solidago rigida 等 30 余种耐寒宿根）；蜂蜜、蜂蜡蜡烛、授标蜂王与四框核群。销售主要走官方渠道（除蜜蜂与核群需现场自取外多数品种可发运加拿大与美国），客户以资深园艺爱好者与本土野花恢复项目为主。

作为小型家族苗圃，花山苗圃常年与加拿大 Delphinium Society 及本地园艺俱乐部保持种质交换与展示合作，牡丹与翠雀曾多次在加拿大及美国园艺展评中获奖。苗圃坚持自繁与分株，避免组培微繁苗以保留品种真实性；养蜂与种植结合的循环模式，使其在小型家庭苗圃中具有较高辨识度。

Nursery History and Living Collection

Blossom Hill Nursery was founded by Joe and Hazel Cook in 1994. Beginning in the 1980s they imported older British strains of Delphinium elatum, then bred their own line over decades, producing plants with stronger stems, larger florets, and improved hardiness. Their delphiniums have won the only two Bronze Medallions awarded in Canada by the UK Delphinium Society, where Joe and Hazel serve as Overseas Vice-Presidents. The peony collection started in 2004 and now holds around 6,000 plants of more than 650 varieties across herbaceous, woody (tree) and Itoh intersectional groups.

Site, Climate, and Production

The nursery sits on the Cook family land near Selwyn, Peterborough County, in southern Ontario, a humid continental climate with cold winters and short summers that suits both hardy peonies and high-elevation delphiniums. Peonies are field-grown and sold as bare-root divisions in autumn; delphiniums ship as potted or bare-root plants from early spring to late autumn. Twelve acres of cropland have been converted into a native wildflower and tallgrass prairie meadow, supplying nectar for the apiary and serving as a seed-production plot.

Product Lines and Sales Channels

The nursery runs four main product lines: delphinium elatum potted and bare-root plants in blue, purple, pink, bicolour and white; bare-root herbaceous, woody, and Itoh peony divisions; native wildflower seed of more than 30 hardy species such as Asclepias tuberosa, Liatris ligulistylis, Lobelia cardinalis, Penstemon digitalis, and Solidago rigida; and apiary products including raw and creamed honey, hand-dipped beeswax candles, marked honey bee queens, and four-frame nucleus colonies. Most plants ship across Canada and to the United States via the official site; bees, queens, and nucs are pickup only at the farm.

Show Record and Industry Standing

As a small family operation, the nursery has long-standing seed and stock exchanges with the Canadian Delphinium Society and local horticultural clubs, and its peonies and delphiniums have earned recognition at Canadian and American flower shows. The Cooks avoid micropropagation in favour of division and cuttings to keep cultivar identity intact, and the integration of beekeeping with perennial production has given the nursery a distinctive voice within the small-scale Canadian nursery community.

Visits and Ordering Notes

Honey and beeswax candles are available year round at the farm by appointment; plant sales run from spring through autumn, also by appointment only, at 681 Fife’s Bay Road, Selwyn, Ontario. Mail orders are placed through the official site, with bare-root peonies and most perennials shipping inside Canada. Bees, queens, and nucs are pickup only. Up-to-date stock and the annual catalogue are posted on the official site, with the 2026 peony list due in August 2026.
