You Pick

From a Family Farm Background to the Founding of Summer Dreams Farm in 2015
Summer Dreams Farm is a small family flower farm located in the quiet town of Oxford in Oakland County, about an hour’s drive north of Detroit, Michigan. The owner grew up on a working farm and earned a business degree at Wayne State University before returning home. Her parents had worked in the Christmas tree industry for many years, and a posthumous leadership award presented by her parents to Christmas tree grower Harvey Koop, one of their mentors, eventually brought the family into contact with Koop’s daughter Janet (Koop) Brondyke, who continued her father’s legacy at Hamilton Dahlia Farm in western Michigan. After receiving a gift of dahlia tubers from the Koop family in 2011, the owner purchased her own land in 2012 and founded Summer Dreams Farm, formally registering the business as Summer Dreams Farm LLC in 2015.
The farm does not span a large acreage, but each year from August through September it produces fresh-cut dahlias across more than two hundred and ten varieties in every style, size and colour, and it sells the same season’s tubers through an online spring tuber store. All cut flowers and tubers are grown on the Michigan farm itself, with no outsourced or third-party supply, and a tightly seasonal, slowly evolving variety list is part of how this small family farm operates.
Besides dahlias, the farm also offers peony cut flowers from late May to mid June, and the on-site farm shop from mid August through early October sells dahlias alongside a range of other seasonal cut flowers and foliage, allowing local customers to source event and wedding flowers in one trip.
Cut Flowers and Tuber Sales across 210-plus Dahlia Varieties
Summer Dreams Farm reaches customers through two main sales windows each year. The spring window, which usually opens for shipping in late March to early April and lasts about a month, runs the online tuber store with freshly divided tubers; the summer window from August to early October supplies fresh-cut dahlias locally in Michigan and runs a Wholesale Flowers channel for event planners. Every tuber shipped out is sent to the Michigan Department of Agriculture for a routine spring inspection for mould, rot and disease before packing.
The tuber store typically opens for pre-orders in early January each year and ships in waves by order time. The 2026 tuber sale closed in late May and the farm has already announced that the next online tuber sale will reopen in January 2027. The retail farm store opens with the peony season in late May, transitions through mid June and then runs from mid August to early October with dahlias and other seasonal flowers and foliage, and during the same window the farm also sells the ARS high-carbon-steel flower clippers it uses on the farm for both harvesting and dividing tuber clumps.
The farm regularly reminds customers that tubers cannot be shipped earlier than late March, since northern Michigan weather can stay below freezing until the end of March and premature shipment would damage tuber vitality. All online orders ship from Michigan, and all pre-sale and after-sale enquiries are handled by email; the farm does not accept phone orders.
Dahlia Growing, Winter Storage and Michigan Department of Agriculture Tuber Inspection
The farm’s Dahlia Care page walks customers through dahlia origin, planting, winter storage and routine maintenance. Dahlias are herbaceous members of the family Asteraceae, native to Mexico, and their tubers were originally cultivated by the Aztecs as a food source in ways similar to modern tapioca or cassava; in the ornamental garden today dahlias are grouped with sunflowers, daisies, chrysanthemums and zinnias in the same family. In most regions dahlias are grown as annuals and are sold mainly as tubers. Plants raised from seed are genetically unique and will not resemble the parent, so dividing tubers is the standard horticultural method for keeping a variety true.
For winter storage the farm recommends a cool but not freezing and high-humidity environment so the tubers do not dry out or freeze during dormancy. Spring planting calls for full sun, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and tubers should not go into the ground until the risk of late spring frost has passed. Because the farm itself sits in northern Michigan, it repeatedly reminds growers to wait until late May, after the last frost, before planting tubers out.
For tuber inspection the farm voluntarily sends every season’s outgoing tubers to the Michigan Department of Agriculture each spring for an official check on mould, rot and disease, and only packs and ships after the inspection clears. This hard quality-control step, which most online tuber sellers do not perform, is one of the reasons the farm has shipped tubers reliably across the United States for years.
You Pick Events and the Summer Cut-Flower Farm Visit
During dahlia peak season Summer Dreams Farm opens its fields for You Pick self-harvest events, the farm’s most direct point of contact with local customers. Each You Pick ticket includes a thirty-two-ounce oversized stadium cup, and pickers can harvest as many stems as they like and pay by the cup at the end. Most people can fit between thirty and fifty flowers per cup. Extra cups can be purchased at the same price if a picker wants to fill more.
Tickets for each You Pick go on sale one week before the date of the event, with one ticket admitting two people and children aged twelve and under admitted free. The farm asks that no one enter without a ticket purchased in advance to keep the field comfortable for everyone, and each ticket comes with a cup of water so the freshly picked flowers stay fresh on the way home. The farm’s full 2026 You Pick calendar is published on the events section of the farm website.
Beyond You Pick the farm also hosts private events on the property, including small weddings, anniversaries, corporate retreats and family gatherings, all of which must be arranged by email with the farm in advance.
