The history of Airlie Gardens reaches back to the early eighteenth century. Sarah and Pembroke Jones purchased the property in 1884 and shaped it into a picturesque garden. In 1999, New Hanover County acquired and restored the 67-acre landscape with support from the county commissioners, a Clean Water Management Trust Fund grant, and local residents.
