Park Overview

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a 127-acre public garden and historic site located in Arcadia, California, approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Established in 1947 through a joint purchase by the State of California and Los Angeles County, the Arboretum is governed through a public/private collaboration between the County and the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation. In 2015, the Arboretum completed a comprehensive Cultural Landscape Report and Treatment Plan and was determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

Founding History

The land has a history stretching back thousands of years to the indigenous peoples of the region. In the 19th century, the land was part of the Spanish mission system and later became part of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Santa Anita. In 1875, Elias Griffith Baldwin—known as “Lucky Baldwin”—a renowned businessman, gambler and hotelier, purchased the property and established his private estate. Baldwin was one of the most famous figures in California history, operating the hotels at Comet and Haven’s Heaven in Nevada and race tracks in the Sierra foothills. After his death in 1912, the estate changed hands several times. In 1947, the State of California and Los Angeles County jointly purchased the land, and the Arboretum opened to the public in 1956.

Botanical Collections

The Arboretum maintains extensive botanical collections organized by geographic regions and plant families: The Africa collection is particularly rich in South African plants—one of Earth’s most botanically diverse regions and home to many fine garden plants. The Australia collection showcases the botanical diversity of the island continent, including eucalyptus, bottlebrushes, and grasstrees that have become staples of Southern California gardens. The Canary Islands collection features iconic dragon trees and aeoniums from this small island group off the northwest coast of Africa. The Madagascar collection represents the Spiny Forest habitat, with striking sculptural forms and fascinating adaptations—representing one of the most endangered floras on Earth. The Aloe Collection showcases over 180 species of African aloes, ranging from spectacular tree aloes to exquisite groundcovers. The Engelmann Oaks grove on Tallac Knoll’s southern slope contains over 250 trees—the largest remaining grove of Engelmann Oaks in Los Angeles County. The Magnolia Collection features over 60 cultivars reaching peak bloom in February and early March, among the most spectacular late winter/early spring displays. The Plumeria Collection contains over 70 fragrant, brilliantly colored plumeria trees on Tallac Knoll.

Research & Conservation

The Arboretum is committed to plant conservation and sustainable horticulture research. Key programs include: Ex-Situ Conservation—maintaining seed banks and living collections of rare and endangered plants to preserve genetic diversity. Engelmann Oak Protection—monitoring soil health, groundwater, and tree conditions in the largest Engelmann Oak grove in Los Angeles County, in collaboration with UC researchers. Urban Wildlife Studies—conducting ongoing wildlife surveys including a comprehensive bird checklist, providing long-term data for urban ecological research. Water Conservation—promoting water-wise irrigation, organic soil management, and native plant landscape design throughout the Arboretum and beyond.

Education & Volunteering

The Arboretum offers educational programming for all ages. School Programs provide K-12 science and ecology curriculum-aligned field trips with hands-on activities. Adult Programs include workshops on organic gardening, water-wise design, native plant cultivation, and special lectures taught by the horticulture staff. Youth & Family Programs offer nature exploration activities, parent-child gardening courses, and summer nature camps. Volunteer Programs—both individual and corporate—provide opportunities in horticulture, events, education, and guest services; completing volunteer hours earns certificates and letters of recommendation. The Arboretum also hosts plant society events including the annual SCHAS Daylily & Bulb Show and LAIFS Fern & Exotic Plant Show.
