Kenton Seth

Crevice Garden Construction Practice in Western Colorado

Paintbrush Gardens is a one-person design and build studio whose core practice is the narrow-slot crevice garden built from a single stone type sourced in Colorado. Crevice gardens are formed by setting stone slabs upright and tightly against one another so that the gaps between them mimic alpine scree slopes; they sustain shallow-rooted, cold-hardy, drought-tolerant alpines and rock plants that struggle in ordinary border soil in the dry American West. Founder Kenton Seth has overseen the construction of more than seventy such gardens since starting the studio in 2013, with the count still rising after the 2022 book brought the method to private homes and public sites.

Meadow and Native Landscape Design

The studio’s second line of work is the perennial meadow of grasses and native flowers designed to replace traditional residential turf. Meadows provide forage and shelter for pollinators and local bird populations while demanding only one annual spring cut-and-rake, no fertiliser, no landscape fabric and no chemical weed control. The third line is the native landscape, composed of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses native to the Colorado Plateau and basin, arranged by hydrology and slope so the planting remains stable without supplemental irrigation over the long term.

On-site Nursery and Net-zero Greenhouses

Because Seth insists on tight control of plant material, the studio keeps a small in-house nursery devoted to growing the specific species each project requires. Greenhouses are designed to net-zero energy: passive solar gain plus carefully sized ventilation openings regulate winter and summer temperatures without fossil-fuel heating or imported electricity. Almost everything raised in the nursery is planted on the studio’s own job sites; the small surplus is released only seasonally through the website, and every plant that leaves the nursery has been field-tested for adaptation.

Online Workshops and Course Series

Paintbrush Gardens runs online Zoom workshops with colleague Maddie Maher. Two recurring sessions are “Killin’ It,” which lays out more than eight ways to remove a residential lawn and the plantings that replace it, and “The Crevice Build Intensive,” taught by Seth, covering stone selection, slot width, plant combinations and on-site build sequence for both home gardeners and practising landscape designers. Each session runs two hours with a thirty-minute question block, and the recording stays available for one month.

The Crevice Garden Book and the Author’s Background

Kenton Seth works primarily in the dry climate of Colorado’s western slope. Before founding Paintbrush Gardens in 2013 he spent ten years in public gardens and nurseries and holds a studio art degree. In 2022 he co-authored “The Crevice Garden” with British specialist Paul Spriggs; published by Timber Press, the volume profiles two hundred and fifty crevice plants in an illustrated A-to-Z, supported by international case studies covering small containers, private gardens and public parks. The studio’s main body of work is in the United States, with occasional international commissions for special projects.
