About the Site

Ontario Wildflowers is a long-running online field guide to the wildflowers that grow in the Canadian province of Ontario. Maintained by Walter Muma as a personal, volunteer-run project, the site brings together photographs and identification notes for hundreds of species in a single browsable index. Although its scope is centred on Ontario, most of the plants featured also occur elsewhere in eastern North America and beyond, so the resource is useful for visitors well outside the province.

Coverage and Maintenance

The site tracks its own progress in plain numbers: 527 species have been published with photos and notes, and roughly 466 species are still to come. Updates appear in irregular batches rather than on a fixed schedule, and existing entries are revised as taxonomy or identification details change. A late-2014 pass aligned a wide range of scientific names with the VASCAN database, the standard reference for Canadian plant nomenclature. The most recent single-species addition on record was Ragged Robin in June 2015.
