Society Profile and Non-profit Mission

The Alberta Regional Lily Society (ARLS) was formed in 1983 by enthusiastic lily fanciers. It operates as a non-profit horticultural group in Alberta and is an affiliate of the North American Lily Society (NALS). Its long-standing objectives are to promote interest and knowledge in growing the genus Lilium and other Liliaceae, encourage lily breeding and recognize achievement, support bulb sales and exchanges, sponsor displays, shows and outdoor plantings, present suitable awards, and cooperate with organizations that share similar aims.

Lily Breeding and Canada’s Living Heritage

ARLS documents Canadian lily hybridizers as well as garden cultivars. Its Canadian section states that the biographies are drawn from “Canadian Lily Hybridizers and their Lilies – A Working Garden Reference.” To sustain this heritage as living plant material, the Society has established beds of Canadian-bred lilies at the St. Albert Botanic Park and the Silver Springs Botanical Gardens in Calgary, with viewing beginning in the 2025 growing season. Its gallery further organizes images under Alberta Bred, Canadian Bred, Asiatic, Martagons, Species and other categories.

Growing Knowledge and Lily Beetle Management

The Society’s resource centre links to a five-part Lily Basics series from Olds College covering taxonomy, morphology, planting and culture, descriptions and divisions, and pests and diseases, together with a downloadable brochure. A dedicated section addresses the red lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii, which can overwinter in Alberta and has been recorded around Calgary, Edmonton, St. Albert and nearby communities. The page brings together identification and management information from horticultural and academic sources, including the Royal Horticultural Society, the University of Guelph and City of Calgary pest-management resources.

Annual Shows and Judging Education

The annual lily show is one of ARLS’s most visible public programs. The published 2026 schedule identifies it as the Society’s 39th Annual Show and includes horticulture, junior and floral-design sections. Designs are evaluated for design, colour harmony, distinction, creativity and expression, conformance and condition, with awards for best design, the design that best enhances the lily, youth exhibitors, first-time exhibitors and the public’s choice. Beginner guidance explains how to select fresh, clean and disease-free stems, retain enough stem in the garden to nourish the bulb, leave anthers intact, and obtain help from classification volunteers and accredited NALS judges.

Membership, Publications and Bulb Exchange

Membership is structured around education and participation. Members receive four quarterly editions of The Bulblet with lily culture, bulb-sale notices, workshops, meetings and show information; they also gain access to reading material in the ARLS library and benefits offered through selected garden centres, greenhouses and Society bulb sales. Current news and events promote prairie-grown Asiatic, Martagon, interdivisional and species lily bulbs, linking hybridizers, home gardeners, exhibitors and public education through a regional Alberta lily network.
