威拉米特河岸的历史花园
麋鹿岩花园坐落在美国俄勒冈州波特兰 Dunthorpe 社区、俯瞰威拉米特河与麋鹿岩岛。苏格兰移民兼谷物商 Peter Kerr 在十九世纪九十年代购入土地，并在随后数年把庄园扩展到十三英亩以上；今天保存的花园约十英亩，被园方称为俄勒冈州现存最古老且规模最大的完整私家花园之一。

捐赠、基金会与产权保全
Kerr 于 1957 年去世后，其女儿 Anne McDonald 与 Jane Platt 将住宅、花园及养护基金捐给俄勒冈圣公会教区，并要求向访客开放。花园自 1959 年起免费开放；1994 年成立的 Elk Rock Garden Foundation 与 Friends of Elk Rock Garden 承担保护工作。教区在 2022 年拟出售房产后，Kerr 后人协助基金会购回庄园，使其免于开发并继续对公众开放。

A Historic Garden Above the Willamette
Elk Rock Garden stands in Portland’s Dunthorpe neighborhood, overlooking the Willamette River and Elk Rock Island. Scottish immigrant and grain entrepreneur Peter Kerr began acquiring the property in the early 1890s and expanded it to more than thirteen acres; the surviving garden is now close to ten acres and is described by the organization as one of Oregon’s oldest and largest intact private gardens.
Olmsted Advice and Estate Development
In 1909 Kerr engaged landscape architect John Charles Olmsted, who advised on the developing garden and the siting of a new residence with views toward Mount Hood. Ellis F. Lawrence, founding dean of the University of Oregon’s architecture program, and William Holford designed the house. In 1917 former Olmsted plantsman and Portland parks superintendent Emanuel Mische also advised Kerr on a planting plan.
Scottish Plants and Northwest Character
Over the following decades Kerr shaped a picturesque landscape of winding paths, streams, wooded areas and broad lawns, combining Scottish species with plants native to the Pacific Northwest. The garden’s named areas now include Magnolia Walk, the Rock Garden, The Point, parterres, Cliff Cottage, a fish pond and plantings around the estate house, all tied together by mature trees and river views.
Gift, Foundation and Property Rescue
After Kerr died in 1957, his daughters Anne McDonald and Jane Platt donated the house, garden and an endowment to the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, stipulating public access. The garden has been free and open to visitors since 1959. The Elk Rock Garden Foundation and Friends of Elk Rock Garden were formed in 1994; when the Diocese put the estate up for sale in 2022, Kerr descendants helped the Foundation repurchase it and protect it from development.
Restoration and Public Learning
Today the nonprofit Foundation works to conserve, restore and enhance the historic property as a garden and learning center focused on horticulture, nature-based solutions, biodiversity and climate resilience. Partnerships with the University of Oregon’s Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School, the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon and Willamette Riverkeeper support cultural-landscape restoration, tree care, volunteer stewardship and educational programming. The garden is currently open on weekdays and admission is free.
