About the North American Lily Society

The North American Lily Society (NALS) is a non-profit organization of lily enthusiasts founded in 1947 to promote interest in the genus Lilium. The society has active members across nearly every U.S. state and Canadian province, plus members worldwide, making it one of the most influential English-language lily societies. Registered as a U.S. 501(c)(3) educational non-profit, NALS is run by a volunteer board and committee chairs.

Publications and Member Services

Members receive four color Quarterly Bulletins per year (March, June, September, December), covering lily culture, species, seed growing, propagation, hybridization, and society news. NALS has published an annual Yearbook since 1947; the 1947-2012 run is preserved on a DVD containing over 6,800 pages. New members receive the 48-page “Let’s Grow Lilies” handbook. The society also sells the 90-page “Showing Lilies” judges’ manual (revised 2006) and the 32-page “Lily Disease Handbook” by Edward A. McRae.

Seed Exchange, Research Trust, and Lily Registry

The NALS Seed Exchange offers member-donated seed of hybrid and species lilies, organized into nine horticultural divisions. The Research Trust Fund Committee, established in 1989, funds small grants to universities, botanical gardens, and individuals for work on wild lily conservation, breeding, pest control, and cultivation physiology; recent grants include flow-cytometry genome-size comparisons and biological control of the red lily beetle. NALS also helps maintain the RHS Lily Registry Supplement.

Annual Lily Show, Popularity Poll, and Judges

Each summer NALS holds an Annual Lily Show and Symposium, hosted by a regional society. The Popularity Poll, run since 1973, asks members to vote on their favorite lilies. Top 2025 winners include ‘Viva la Vida’, ‘Pink Jazz’, ‘Yellow Brush’, ‘Elusive’, and ‘Finally’. Cultivars winning three years in a row enter the Hall of Fame (Black Beauty, Casa Blanca, Connecticut King, Enchantment, Scheherazade, Conca d’Or, Anastasia, Miss Feya, Easter Morn). NALS accredits judges through its Judging School and awards the E. H. Wilson Memento (since 1959) for outstanding contribution to the genus Lilium and the Slate-MacDaniels Trophy (since 1982) for service to NALS; the 2025 E. H. Wilson recipient was Ieuan Evans.

Regional Societies, Cultural Pages, and Public Participation

Regional lily societies affiliated with NALS run their own shows, bulb sales, and tours. In Canada these include the Alberta, Canadian Prairie, Manitoba, Ontario, South Saskatchewan, and Victoria Regional Lily Societies; in the U.S. they include the Mid Atlantic, Michigan, New England, North Star, Ozark, and Potomac Lily Societies. The society’s culture pages cover all nine horticultural divisions (Asiatic, Martagon, Candidum, American Native, Longiflorum, Trumpet/Aurelian, Oriental, Interdivisional, Species) plus practical guidance on planting, winter protection, hybridizing, disease control, and red-lily-beetle management. NALS hosts the 3rd Virtual International Lily Show & Symposium in 2026, with entries accepted January 12 through August 6.
