### Overview
Better Homes & Gardens (BHG), founded in 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa, by Edwin Meredith—who previously served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under Woodrow Wilson. Originally titled “Fruit, Garden and Home,” the magazine was renamed Better Homes & Gardens beginning with the August 1924 issue.
BHG is one of the “Seven Sisters”—a group of women’s service magazines—and focuses on home improvement, cooking, gardening, crafts, healthy living, decorating, and entertaining. Published 12 times per year by People Inc.
### Test Kitchen
Established in 1928, the BHG Test Kitchen has been developing and testing recipes for home cooks for nearly a century. The team consists of trained food professionals with degrees in food science, nutrition, culinary arts, or dietetics, testing over 2,500 recipes annually.
The New Cookbook, affectionately called the “Red Plaid Cookbook,” was first published in 1930 and has sold approximately 38 million copies worldwide.
### Test Garden
The half-acre Test Garden, established in 1998 at the Des Moines headquarters, provides garden-tested information on plants, gardening methods, and ideas. The garden changes yearly to test new plant varieties before they reach nurseries.
### Brand Extensions
BHG has partnered with Walmart since 1998, offering 4,000+ products across home, garden, and kitchen categories. The Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate brand has been operating since 1978.
