苗圃将约 150 个菊花品种按国际菊花协会(NCS)认可的花型分类体系组织,主要包括 irregular incurve(不规则内卷型)、reflex(反折型)、incurve(内卷型)、decorative(装饰型)、intermediate incurve(中间内卷型)、pompons(球型)、single & semi-doubles(单瓣与半重瓣型)、anemone(银莲型)、spoons(匙瓣型)、quills(管瓣型)、spiders(蛛网型)、brush and thistle(刷状与蓟型)以及 unclassified exotics(未分类异型)等十余个大类;此外另设 cascades(悬崖型)专区,单独介绍 1909 年在美国最早出现的悬崖菊品种 “Anna” 及二战后逐渐普及的栽培技术。

King’s Mums is the oldest operating Chrysanthemum nursery in the United States, founded in 1954 by Leland Theodore “Ted” King. Over more than seven decades the nursery has passed through three ownerships and locations, moving from central California to Oregon City in 2008 and then to Tulsa, Oklahoma under current stewards Brian and Sheila Kanotz in 2014. Brian brings more than twenty years of chrysanthemum production experience from institutions such as Callaway Gardens and Longwood Gardens, while Sheila also serves as Director of Horticulture at the Philbrook Museum of Art. The current collection features approximately 150 cultivars, of which more than 80 have been laboratory-certified as pathogen-free, making the nursery the primary source for exhibition and spray mums in the United States.

Three Owners, Three Locations, One Family Tradition

King’s Mums was founded in 1954 in central California, where Ted King turned his hobby of collecting exotic global chrysanthemum varieties into a premier supplier for both amateur and professional growers. Many of the cultivars sold in the country today were originally bred or introduced by Mr. King. In 2008, Kim and Ray Gray purchased the nursery and relocated operations to Oregon City, Oregon, where they integrated new production technologies. In 2014, Brian and Sheila Kanotz acquired the business and moved it to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Each generation has preserved the King family’s strict standards for varietal purity and plant health, keeping the nursery as a trusted source for serious chrysanthemum enthusiasts across the country.

Cultivar Catalog Organized by NCS Bloom Form Classifications

The collection of roughly 150 cultivars is organized according to the bloom form classifications recognized by the National Chrysanthemum Society, including irregular incurve, reflex, incurve, decorative, intermediate incurve, pompons, single and semi-doubles, anemone, spoons, quills, spiders, brush and thistle, and unclassified exotics. A dedicated cascades section documents the earliest American cascade variety, the white “Anna” introduced around 1909, along with the training techniques that became widespread after World War II and the scale for judging entries that the NCS first published in its Show Handbook in June 1951. Shoppers can browse each class to see the specific plants offered and the quantities available for the current shipping season.

Ordering Workflow, Payment Options and Shipping Schedule

Sales open each year around New Year’s Day and run through June, with shipping scheduled on Mondays from March to June. Plants are propagated only against confirmed orders and not grown on speculation. A minimum order of ten plants is required and the system blocks checkout until that threshold is met. Shipping is sent via UPS 3-Day Select with a USD 5.50 service fee per package, and most orders under 75 plants fit in a single box. The nursery does not ship to PO Boxes, Alaska or anywhere outside the continental United States, and does not accept orders by phone, mail or email. Payment is processed through PayPal invoices that can be paid with any major credit card without a PayPal account, and nonprofit organizations can request PO number arrangements. Cancellations must be submitted at least four weeks before the scheduled shipping date, and substitutions may be made with a similar type and bloom date when supply is insufficient. The nursery does not accept returns on the perishable product.

Growing Instructions, Cascade Specialty Section and Publications

All large exhibition-style varieties grow as easily as ordinary garden mums when given at least half a day of sun and protection from freezing in cold regions. Plants do not need to be set out before July and will still bloom on schedule, so gardeners in colder zones can safely wait for the last spring frost date. The nursery recommends potting rooted cuttings into 4- or 6-inch containers in a lightly composted or soilless mix for 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting, and suggests acclimating the young plants in shaded conditions for the first few days. All rooted cuttings are propagated in Ellepot paper sleeves that can be planted directly into the ground without removing the biodegradable fabric. The cascade section provides a full history of cascade culture together with training, pinching and staking techniques, while non-plant items such as the Beginner’s Handbook, Advanced Grower’s Handbook, Surprise Collection and Mini Surprise Collection are listed under Gardening Products and Publications.
