Ensata Gardens

Ensata Gardens is a long-running family mail-order nursery devoted to Japanese and Siberian irises, now in its 40th year of operation. In 2025 the nursery came out of retirement to release four tetraploid Pseudata irises — the first ever hybridized in the United States — reaffirming its place as one of North America’s most important sources of Japanese and beardless irises.

Nursery History and Location

Ensata Gardens is a home-based mail-order iris nursery in Galesburg, Michigan (USDA Zone 5), run by John Coble and Bob Bauer. The nursery specializes in Japanese irises (Iris ensata) and Siberian irises, and has been growing and shipping plants by mail for 40 years. Founders Coble and Bauer earlier ran Bauer-Coble Studios, a stained-glass workshop they established 48 years ago, which shaped the nursery’s artisanal sensibility before being discontinued.

Catalog and Collection Size

Japanese irises remain the centerpiece of the catalog, alongside Siberian irises and other beardless irises. Ensata once held the largest collection of Japanese iris varieties outside Japan — about 450 cultivars — and has now scaled back to around 100 cultivars while remaining one of the most comprehensive sources of Japanese irises in North America. Orders are accepted year-round by mail, with bare-root rhizomes shipped across the United States.

Hybridizing Breakthrough and 2025 Introductions

Collaborator Jill Copeland has been hybridizing Pseudata irises (I. pseudacorus × I. ensata) for over 40 years. In 2025 the nursery released four brand-new TETRAPLOID Pseudata cultivars — the first tetraploid Pseudatas ever hybridized and introduced in the United States. They were produced by treating Pseudata seedlings with colchicine and then crossing with tetraploid Japanese irises; two of the four have already surprised the iris world by producing a branch coming off a branch. The nursery also stocks “The Japanese Iris,” the 1990 Brandeis University Press reference edited by Currier McEwen for the Society for Japanese Irises.

Ordering, Shipping, and Guarantees

Ensata accepts U.S. orders only (no international orders at this time) with a $20 minimum plus shipping. The two shipping windows are mid-April through early June and early August through mid-October, with no orders accepted after September 1. Payment options include PayPal, check, or money order in U.S. dollars; Michigan residents add 6% sales tax. The nursery guarantees satisfaction and offers a full no-questions-asked refund on plants customers are not happy with.
