The Dwarf Iris Society (DIS), founded in 1950 by Walter Welch as the Dwarf Iris Club, is an educational and scientific nonprofit organization and a section of the American Iris Society. DIS is devoted to the Miniature Dwarf Bearded (MDB) irises—bearded irises up to 20 cm (8 inches) in height, the tiniest of all bearded irises. The society also encourages interest in other small irises such as reticulatas, arilbred dwarfs, and dwarf beardless irises.
Research and Activities
DIS operates an online store offering seeds of MDBs, SDBs, and bearded species, including both open-pollinated and hand-pollinated varieties. The Display Garden Program certifies member gardens that showcase dwarf irises. The 2025 seed sale began October 1, offering seeds at modest prices with generous portions.
Publications and Resources
DIS provides extensive online resources including classic articles on dwarf bearded irises in PDF format, cultivar galleries (Modern MDBs through 1990, Classic MDBs 1959-1989, Historic DBs to 1958), and PowerPoint presentations on dwarf iris cultivation and breeding. Members receive the annual Portfolio publication.
Awards and Competitions
DIS presents annual awards recognizing outstanding dwarf iris cultivars. The 2025 awards page has been updated with award winners through 2025. The society celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025 with special merchandise available at the online store.
