Family Roots and a One-Block Greenhouse in Camrose

Green Valley Gardens is a small family-run greenhouse that has been operating in Camrose, Alberta since 2000. The property sits on 50th Street just south of Augustana University and next to the city’s water treatment plant. For more than two decades it has been the only commercial greenhouse inside the City of Camrose — no chain garden centre has set up shop across the street, and the lot is worked each spring by family members and a handful of long-time staff. The greenhouse is strictly seasonal: it opens to the public for May and June of each year, then closes for the long Alberta winter, with all production capacity funnelled into bedding plants, hanging baskets and container plantings during the short prairie growing season.

May and June Season and What Is on the Bench

The business calendar follows the southern Alberta growing season. In early May the doors open and the floor is filled with potted annuals, hanging baskets and vegetable starts that were seeded in late April and grown on under glass. By early June the outside nursery area is open, and the focus shifts to perennials, fruit trees, shrubs and large container combinations. Outside those two months the greenhouse is essentially closed for maintenance, but returning customers know to phone or email ahead of the season so the staff can pre-grow stock to specification. Water plants are another seasonal line and only become available in June, so customers with ponds or shallow water features generally need to wait until the second month of the season to pick them up. For Camrose residents, the short window at Green Valley Gardens is often the only local chance to get a full spring bedding and landscape order without driving to Edmonton or Red Deer.

Custom Containers and the Signature Hanging Baskets

The shop’s signature product is custom container planting. Green Valley Gardens keeps a team of experienced container designers who build up an alluring range of baskets and containers using some of the newest pots and resin planters on the market, filled with fresh annuals or tried-and-true favourites. Customers are welcome to bring in their own containers from home — favourite pots, baskets or window boxes — and have the staff plant them up to a stated colour scheme, sun exposure or budget. The store then grows the finished container on through the spring, and customers pick up the finished piece in late May. Beyond custom work, the shop also stocks certified annuals from Proven Winners®, a North American plant brand known for weather tolerance, disease resistance and a long bloom window that fits Alberta’s late spring to early frost timeline.

Statues, Fountains, Trees and Shrubs

The outdoor product range falls into two broad categories. The first is statues and fountains. Green Valley Gardens has long carried Henri Studios / Stonecasters, an American cast-stone maker that has been in business for more than 50 years and is known for hand-poured fountains, statuary and garden ornaments ranging from classical to contemporary styles. The store keeps a selection of bubblers, statues and small garden “buddies” that work as accents in flower beds, patios and around pool decks. The second category is trees and shrubs. The store draws on a handful of the largest nursery suppliers in Western Canada and selects stock that is hardy to the Alberta climate. Trees and shrubs usually arrive the week before Mother’s Day, and the offering typically includes fruit trees, small fruit, vines, foundation shrubs, hardy roses, small flowering trees, accent trees, shade trees, hedging material and perennials (with new arrivals coming in weekly through the season).
