Founding and Six Training Facilities

Lipka – School Facility for Environmental Education Brno (a public contributory organization of the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic) was founded after the Velvet Revolution by environmental educator Aleš Máchal and biologist Hana Korvasová. It officially opened on 27 October 1991 with the planting of a young oak tree in the garden of its first functionalist villa in the Pisárky district of Brno, starting with five staff members. To cover both non-governmental conservation work and public education, the two founders simultaneously established the civic association Rezekvítek and the school facility Lipka. Since 1 January 2026, Vladislava Kolářová has served as director of the institution.

Over 35 years, Lipka has grown into six permanent training facilities and three residential field bases: Lipová (opened 1991 in Brno-Pisárky), focusing on preschool and primary school programmes, traditional crafts, and natural materials; Rozmarýnek (joined 1999 in Brno-Jundrov), featuring a natural-building eco-house, animal enclosures, and a permaculture garden near the Svratka River; Rychta (opened 2002 in Krásensko in the Drahany Uplands), a 400-year-old heritage-listed rural homestead that reopened in September 2026 after a decade-long renovation to host secondary school field courses in the Moravian Karst; Jezírko (joined 2004 in the forests of Brno-Soběšice), dedicated to forest pedagogy; Kamenná (opened September 2009 in Brno-Štýřice), serving as an incubator for teacher education, university teaching, and climate programmes; and Podnikavá mysl (established September 2023 in central Brno at Masaryk University), promoting entrepreneurship education and the Enterprising School certification, complemented by the residential camps Vrápenka, Absolonka, and Podmitrov (under development since 2024 in the Vysočina region).

Four Certified Model Natural Gardens

Lipka maintains four certified model natural gardens across its Brno workplaces, all managed without synthetic chemicals, and partners with the Czech Natural Garden Association (“Přírodní zahrada”) to advise kindergartens and schools on designing and certifying school natural gardens while co-editing the school garden magazine “Školní zaHRAda”. All four gardens open free of charge every June during the Open Gardens Weekend and host seasonal celebrations, pruning and composting workshops, seed and houseplant swaps, and biochar demonstrations throughout the year.

The garden at Lipová is equipped with acoustic and tactile educational installations accessible to blind and visually impaired visitors, including a wood-and-stone belfry, a dendrophone, a large sound spiral built from old tree trunks, a wooden bird gallery, relief blocks of trees and wildlife, and animal-track stepping stones, alongside a sunny butterfly slope and raised vegetable and medicinal herb beds. The garden at Rozmarýnek follows permaculture design principles with raised beds, a sun trap, mobile planters, an herb spiral, diverse composters, a solar fruit dryer, greywater and rainwater harvesting systems, and enclosures for rabbits and poultry. Surrounded by woodland, the garden at Jezírko combines herb, vegetable, and perennial beds with a natural pond, a root-zone wastewater treatment plant, a natural succession zone, a mixed native hedgerow, a rain garden, a two-kilometer interactive forest trail with eight stations, and an adjacent heritage apple and pear orchard with glass observation beehives.

Riverside Climate and Therapy Garden and European Awards

At the Kamenná workplace, alongside a compact courtyard garden demonstrating intensive urban food and habitat planting, the City of Brno leased a municipal plot in the Svratka River biocorridor to Lipka in 2015 for educational use. Supported by European funds, Lipka completed the garden “Zahrada U Řeky” (“Garden by the River”) in autumn 2017 and opened it fully for teaching in autumn 2019 once the municipal barrier-free metal footbridge was completed; from April to October it opens free to the public every Wednesday afternoon.

Designed as a natural, climate-adaptive, therapeutic, and educational showcase in the city center, “Zahrada U Řeky” features a flower lawn mown in a rotational mosaic pattern to preserve insect habitats, companion-planted raised beds, rainwater retention systems, natural gardening information boards, tactile sensory panels, and a seed library, while the barrier-free footbridge doubles as an outdoor exhibition space. In 2021, “Zahrada U Řeky” won a special jury award (second place in Europe in the category “Gardens for Health, Care and Therapy”) at the 4th European Award for Ecological Gardening; in 2023, the Lipová garden was nominated among the top 15 European educational gardens in the same competition, and in 2026 Lipka’s “School Climate Gardens” initiative reached the finals of the E.ON Energy Globe award.

Garden Therapy and the Floramobil

Across its gardens, Lipka conducts garden therapy programmes for children, pupils with special educational needs, seniors, and adults recovering from burnout, injury, or long-term illness. The institution collaborates with the LOTOS addiction aftercare center, organized the first national conference “Therapy by Nature and for Nature” in 2017, and works closely with the Czech Garden Therapy Association, while providing free on-site consultations on therapeutic gardens to public social and healthcare facilities in the South Moravian Region.

To bring garden therapy directly to bedridden patients who cannot go outdoors, Lipka developed and field-tested the “Floramobil” — a mobile mini-garden cart built from solid wood and metal with a washable finish, a pull-out work surface that extends over a patient’s bed, a recessed tray for working with potted plants and soil substrates, and storage compartments for therapeutic tools. The Floramobil is available in two configurations: a basic version (30,000 CZK excluding VAT / 36,300 CZK including VAT, including technical training, the publication “How the Garden Heals”, and a basic planting set) and an extended version (40,000 CZK excluding VAT / 48,400 CZK including VAT, adding a five-activity therapeutic tool kit, a methodology manual, and a two-to-three-hour staff workshop), alongside Lipka’s six-set handcrafted “Touch of Autumn” sensory kit.

School Programmes, University Teaching, and Eco-School Networks

According to Lipka’s 2025 Annual Report, the organization delivered 1,100 one-day and residential environmental education programmes for kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools in 2025, attended by more than 21,500 pupils across over 5,000 hours of instruction. Afternoon and holiday activities encompassed 33 afternoon clubs (441 regular members), 8 weekend clubs (38 events with 521 participants), 23 residential camps (157 days for 646 children), 48 day camps (237 days for 972 children), and 112 public events attracting 8,468 visitors.

In teacher education and higher learning, Lipka held 91 professional development events for 2,223 educators (942 training hours) in 2025 and taught 23 university courses (610 teaching hours for 545 students) under contract with the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University in Brno, Mendel University in Brno, and the Faculty of Science at Palacký University in Olomouc, while administering the South Moravian Region student thesis competition on environment and sustainability. Lipka also serves as the South Moravian regional coordinator for the international Eco-Schools (“Ekoškola”) programme and the national “MRKEV” and “Mrkvička” environmental education networks (providing four annual mailings including the “Bedrník” journal and “Mrkvička” bulletin at 600 CZK/year for schools and 500 CZK/year for kindergartens), and co-founded the Czech outdoor learning platform “Učíme se venku”.
