Bluebird Haven Iris Garden is a family-run iris specialty nursery located in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada, within the wine country of El Dorado County. The garden sits on the western slope of the range between historic Placerville and the state capital Sacramento, at roughly 2,000 feet elevation, where a Mediterranean-style climate and cool mountain nights make the site especially well suited to bearded, beardless, and oncobred iris culture and hybridizing.

Nursery History & Scale

The nursery has been in continuous family operation for more than 50 years, and the founder is currently transitioning the business to the next generation, gradually reducing both the planted area and the number of varieties offered. The display garden covers about one acre, surrounded by acres of row-cultivated production beds, and at peak bloom more than 100,000 iris bloom simultaneously each spring.

Garden Setting & Visitor Experience

The display area is laid out in Victorian show-garden style, with a period gazebo, viewing benches, walking paths, and picnic tables, allowing visitors to walk the rows, record the numbers and names of favorite varieties, and place orders online at their leisure. The garden opens around May 1 each year, Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 during the bloom season, with appointments available on other days. Admission is $5 per person; children under 12 enter free. There are no trash receptacles on site and no orders are taken in the garden — visitors are asked to pack out their own refuse to keep the mountain setting pristine.
