Greenlee & Associates

Greenlee & Associates is a California-based garden design and plant sourcing studio founded in 2009 by John Greenlee, widely known in horticultural circles as “The Grass Man,” with a singular focus on sustainable grass ecology and ornamental meadow landscapes designed for low maintenance and drought tolerance.

Founding Vision and Studio Overview

With more than four decades of experience in sustainable ornamental grass communities, Greenlee pioneered the use of perennial grass ecologies as the structural backbone of low-maintenance, drought-tolerant meadows. The studio’s portfolio spans celebrated public projects including Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom savannas, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and the Houston Zoo, alongside more than one hundred private residences across Northern California and abroad. Over thirty-five years of project work has produced an enduring collaborator network spanning Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the New York Botanical Garden, Chicago Botanic Garden, and leading firms such as AECOM, SWA Group, and James Corner Field Operations.

Studio Team and Three Service Lines

The close-knit team combines John Greenlee’s design vision with the day-to-day expertise of Office Manager Pat Peavey, Junior Landscape Designer Roberto Gradilla, Associate Madeira BooydeGraaff, Bookkeeper Marianne Amaya, and Digital Content Manager Sedge Greenlee. The studio offers three coordinated services: full-service design consulting for private clients, contract-grown plant sourcing for large public projects, and professional collaboration with fellow landscape architects. Named the 2002 Horticulturist of the Year by the Southern California Horticultural Society, Greenlee leads a practice recognized with the AIA Award for Urban Design at Hunters Point Shoreline, four Gold Medals at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, and three Gold Medals at the Carmel Garden Show.

Meadow Plant Palette and Signature Projects

The studio curates a roster of nearly forty ornamental grasses and meadow groundcovers forming the core of every design. California natives such as California Field Sedge (Carex praegracilis), California Meadow Sedge (Carex pansa), and The King Pacific Reed Grass (Calamagrostis nutkaensis ‘The King’) are joined by signature selections bred through John Greenlee’s own trials, including Greenlee Hybrid Moor Grass (Sesleria ‘Greenlee Hybrid’) and Pale Puma Spiderwort (Tradescantia ‘Greenlee’). All are selected for drought tolerance and low-maintenance performance across varied climates and soils. Signature built works include the Backyard Shangri-La rooftop meadow atop a Napa wine cave, the Mixed Meadow Garden on the San Francisco Peninsula that blends more than fifty grasses into a hillside meadow capable of supporting maintenance vehicles, and a one-acre Floating Meadow installation on a Napa Valley pond.

Publications and International Recognition

John Greenlee is the author of two landmark books, The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses and Meadows By Design: The American Meadow Garden, the latter receiving the 2010 Garden Writers’ Association Gold Medal for Best Book. He has also contributed to Reimagining the California Lawn, Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s 21st Century Gardening Series, and other influential titles. He has delivered an average of ten international lectures each year since 1992, including keynote appearances at the Beijing Landscape Expo 2019 and Lund University’s Urban Growth symposium in Sweden. The studio’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker, Sunset Magazine, and House & Garden, and broadcast on PBS The New Garden and HGTV Way to Grow.
