Nursery Background and Location
The Guernsey Clematis Nursery Ltd is located on the Channel Island of Guernsey, roughly 100 miles from the UK coast and 18 miles from Normandy. The island’s mild oceanic climate is well suited to young clematis propagation. The business was founded by Raymond Evison in 1984, with the first one-acre glasshouse coming into production in spring 1985. Operations now extend across the Domarie, Avondale, Montrose and Braye vineries, totalling about 3.4 hectares of glass, with up to 90 staff at peak season.
Production Volume and Global Reach
The nursery produces roughly 3 million young clematis plants a year, about 25% of the world supply of young clematis, and at peak production takes 30,000 to 45,000 cuttings per day. Output includes twice-pruned 7 cm liners and 3-month 3.5 cm Ellegaard plugs for UK and European markets. Plants are exported to 19 countries, with the United States taking about 45%, the United Kingdom about 35%, and the balance going to other European and Asian destinations. Plants shipped to the USA, Canada, New Zealand and other regulated markets are fully defoliated and compost-washed before being packed into insulated boxes for air or sea freight.
Breeding Programme and Cultivar Range
Since its founding the nursery has introduced more than 100 clematis cultivars and species, focused on compact, repeat-flowering types suited to patios, balconies, window boxes and small city gardens. New commercial introductions are developed in a long-running joint venture with Danish rose specialist Poulsen Roser A/S; each cultivar is trialled on Guernsey and in Denmark for 8 to 10 years before release, then grown on by specialist nurseries in the USA, UK and the EU who supply garden centres.
Glasshouse Technology, Quality Accreditation and Sustainability
The 5,000 m² propagation block at the Braye Vinery uses computer-controlled ebb-and-flow mobile benches so the foliage stays dry and fungal pressure stays low. The company holds ISO 9001:2000 accreditation through LR and UKAS. Environmentally it runs an IPM programme, recycles most of its irrigation water, harvests rainwater for 3 to 4 months of supply, and uses night screens on the glass to limit light pollution, making it one of Guernsey’s flagship sustainable nurseries.

Between 2003 and 2017 the nursery’s compact clematis won 31 gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including 15 gold medals for clematis cultivar exhibits, making it one of the most decorated clematis exhibitors at Chelsea.
