Origins and Legal Status

The Belgische Dendrologische Vereniging (BDB) was founded in 1953 by a handful of Belgian members of the International Dendrology Union (the predecessor of today’s International Dendrology Society, established in 1952). The original group included J. and R. De Belder, R. Lenoir, Ch. de Limburg Stirum and A. de Radzitzky d’Ostrowick. From 1988 onwards, honorary president Philippe de Spoelberch together with Michel Decalut and Jean-Claude Baudouin turned the society into an active association, growing the membership from roughly fifty to over five hundred. In 1993 the statutes were revised, converting the group into a non-profit society (vereniging zonder winstoogmerk) registered at the Brussels commercial court under enterprise number 0450.886.286. Abraham Rammeloo has chaired the board since 2015.

Lectures, Study Days and Society Publications

Each winter the BDB holds a series of lectures (voordrachten) covering dendrological topics, travelogues and notable trees. The annual study day (studiedag) focuses on a single genus, inviting international specialists to discuss systematics, taxonomy, cultivation and landscape use, followed by a visit to a relevant plant collection. Genera covered between 1991 and 2025 include Tilia, Acer, Ilex, Magnolia, Aesculus, Viburnum, Cornus, Sorbus, Azalea, Euonymus, Quercus, Abies, Juglans, Betula, Carpinus, Ostrya, Ostryopsis, Pinus, Stewartia, Fraxinus, Fagus, Picea, lepidote Rhododendron, Hydrangea, Crataegus, Alnus, Prunus, Salix, Rubus, Fabaceae, Ulmaceae and Mahonia. About five one-day excursions within Belgium and one multi-day international study trip (studiereis) are organised each year; since 1989 these trips have reached Canada, Denmark, Germany (multiple editions), France, Greece, the United Kingdom (multiple editions), Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, the United States and Switzerland. The society’s publications split in 1994 into a quarterly bilingual Newsletter and an annual Jaarboek of roughly 200 pages, edited successively by Michel Decalut, Roel Jacobs, Dirk De Meyere (chief editor from 2000) and Koen Camelbeke (responsible publisher from 2015).

The BELTREES Inventory Database

BELTREES is the systematic tree inventory maintained on behalf of the society by Stichting Arboretum Wespelaar since 1987. As of January 2026 the database lists 41,613 living trees across 2,534 different taxa (about 46% species and 54% hybrids or cultivars) distributed across 1,292 parks and private collections. Of the living trees, 38,605 (92.8%) are in good condition — including 677 with exceptionally vigorous growth and remarkable dimensions — while 1,838 (4.4%) grow poorly, 936 (2.2%) show serious damage or limb loss, and 234 (0.6%) are declining. A further 3,794 records (8.3%) document trees that have died or been felled since the start of measurement in 1985. Regionally, Flanders holds 19,066 trees, Wallonia 17,200 and the Brussels Capital Region 5,347. Of the 41,613 living trees, 1,341 are classified as national champions (the largest girth measured at 1.5 m for a given taxon), and another 30,114 are listed as “notable or well known.” The most frequently recorded taxon in the database is purple beech (Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea), with 1,609 entries.

Field Survey, Partnerships and Membership

The society’s field survey was led by Jean-Claude Baudouin under the Belgian federal government and later the Walloon Region, covering some 500 parks and roughly 13,000 trees. The results were published as the 1997 book “Bomen in België,” illustrated by Roel Jacobs. The BDB maintains working relationships with the International Dendrology Society, Arboretum Wespelaar, Arboretum Kalmthout and Meise Botanic Garden, co-hosting several study days with these institutions. Membership costs 35 euros for individuals and 65 euros for a family (two members at the same address sharing one set of publications); payment to BE71 0353 8688 7369 (GEBABEBB) completes enrolment and grants access to the annual Jaarboek, the quarterly Newsletter, society activities and the members’ directory. Laura Wester runs the secretariat, currently based at Arboretum Wespelaar in Haacht-Wespelaar.

Publications, Downloads and Public Resources

The society keeps an online Downloads section with slides from past lectures, study-day reports and international study trips, covering botanical journeys to Japan, California, Greece, Slovenia, Korea, Guizhou and the Himalayas, alongside themed dossiers on Buxus, Quercus, Rubus, Salix, Stewartia, Ulmaceae and Mahonia. Back issues of the Jaarboek from 2012 to 2024 are sold at 20 euros each (postage excluded), earlier volumes from 1994 to 2010 at 10 euros, and the complete run 1994–2024 (excluding the sold-out 2002, 2003 and 2011 issues) for 300 euros. Pick-up is possible at Arboretum Wespelaar; postal dispatch can be arranged through the secretariat at the address listed on the official site.
