‘Wichtel’ 与 P.a.
Horní Bradle
About the Site
alpinky.com is a personal gardening diary maintained by Czech horticulturist Michal Plíšek (born 1985 in Chrudim), focused on cool-climate bulbous plants, alpine species, woodland perennials, and grafted conifer witches’ brooms grown at his private garden in Chrudim, Czechia, at roughly 220 m elevation in a hot-summer lowland setting. The site catalogs 392 species in an A-to-Z gallery, organizes notes by growing conditions (alpine, bulb, woodland, grafted, daphne, saxifrage), and includes extensive personal observation on each entry rather than acting as a commercial catalog.
Collection and Specialisms
The collection covers more than eleven genera of cool-temperate rarities: Dionysia, Saxifraga (sections Kabschia and Porphyrion in particular), Androsace, Primula allionii cultivars, Galanthus (snowdrops, including named forms such as ‘Lady Elphinstone’ and ‘Mr Plisek’), Crocus, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Tulipa species, Fritillaria, Arum, Cyclamen, plus a woodland section with Speirantha convallarioides, Aceriphyllum rossii and a few Cypripedium parviflorum seedlings. Each entry records how the plant performs in the Chrudim lowland summers, which differs from higher-altitude garden conditions.
Family Garden and Construction
The garden was established decades ago by the author’s grandfather František Plíšek and has since been expanded with more than 100 tonnes of stone delivered in stages. The site now includes several distinct features: the original front rockery with its small pond (now being rebuilt with dolomitic limestone in place of the original opuka), a 2010 limestone front rockery weighing over ten tonnes, a rear main rockery begun in 2000 that has reached more than 100 m² with four ponds and 70+ tonnes of stone, a covered rockery built in 2010 to provide stable humidity for Dionysia and Primula allionii (mimicking their natural cliff-overhang habitat), a north-facing collection area hosting the Porphyrion saxifrages, and tufa troughs added in 2012.
Named Cultivars and Field Collection
A distinctive feature of the site is the author’s self-collected and named witches’ broom cultivars, most published under the Plíšek name: Pinus strobus ‘Plíšek’ (found in 2015 near the main gate of the agricultural school in Chrudim at six metres up), Fagus sylvatica ‘Plíšek’ (found in 2003 above the Krkanka valley near Slavice and lifted in 2015), Picea abies ‘Plíšek’ (found in 2008 near the Báry lookout, claimed as one of the smallest spruce witches’ brooms known), Larix decidua ‘Plíšek’ (found in 2012 at Ustupky near Seč, claimed among the smallest larch witches’ brooms in the world), Picea omorika ‘Plíšek’ (found in 2015 in Chrudim’s main park) and Picea abies ‘Plíškova Seč’ (found in 2010 on the hairpins between Petříkovice and Liboměřice, reported as even smaller than P.a. ‘Wichtel’ or P.a. ‘Cukrák’). The site also documents collecting trips to Macedonia and Croatia.
Horní Bradle Nature Reserve
Since 2017 the author runs a separate private nature reserve on restored land in Horní Bradle, complementing the Chrudim home garden as an additional site for the alpines and grafted brooms. The site also publishes a clanky (articles) section with notes from 2008 to 2013 plus topic studies (radon in garden soils, grafting technique, saxifrage cultivation) and an annual review series.
