Iris Society of Massachusetts (ISM)

The Iris Society of Massachusetts (ISM) is a friendly, exciting, sociable and educational nonprofit organization founded in 1981 for iris enthusiasts across New England, with membership costing only five dollars per household per year, one of the best bargains among regional iris societies.

About the Society

Headquartered in Massachusetts, ISM draws its members primarily from Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Vermont, with a few members planted in other states and even other countries. As the official affiliate of the American Iris Society (AIS) and AIS Region 1, which covers New England together with Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, the society welcomes apartment dwellers, suburbanites, country gardeners and commercial growers, uniting novices and veterans of many years around a shared love of irises of all types and sizes.

Core Activities

From late April through July, when irises are blooming across New England, ISM sponsors iris shows and tours of members’ gardens; in summer the society holds rhizome sales and auctions where modern hybrids are available at bargain prices. Three or four weekend meetings are held each year to discuss iris culture and gardening, view slides of new varieties, old favorites, exotic species and hybridizers’ seedling patches, and hear from iris experts and enthusiasts from across the country. Newcomers and guests are always welcome at any event, with no prior experience required, and members enjoy a twice-yearly newsletter, free participation in meetings, garden tours, sales and shows, and the chance to build long-term connections with iris lovers across New England and beyond.

Membership and Newsletter

The ISM membership fee includes a subscription to the IRID-ISM newsletter, attendance at all meetings, garden tours, sales and shows. The IRID-ISM newsletter has been published continuously since 1982, reaching Volume 39 in 2020 and remaining the most important reference for New England iris growers. As an AIS affiliate, ISM encourages members to also join the American Iris Society to connect with a national group dedicated to the favorite flower; the 2026 calendar features the Winter Hybridizers’ Meeting, Spring Meeting and Photo Contest, Region 1 Spring Garden Tour and Judges’ Training, the AIS National Convention, ISM Garden Tour, Rhizome Sale, summer Auction, Region 1 Fall Meeting and the Fall Seed and Plant Exchange, alongside joint events with the Connecticut Iris Society.

Iris Resources

The Iris Info section of the ISM website offers a systematic introduction to the nine major groups of garden irises, including the six bearded classes: Miniature Dwarf (MDB), Standard Dwarf (SDB), Intermediate (IB), Border (BB), Miniature Tall (MTB) and Tall (TB), together with beardless irises and aril/arilbred irises; each entry lists plant height, bloom season, garden use and cultivation tips, making the page a practical starting point for New England gardeners selecting varieties. The Iris Links page curates fourteen national and international iris societies, including the American Iris Society, Aril Society International, Dwarf Iris Society, Historical Iris Preservation Society, Median Iris Society, Reblooming Iris Society, Society for Japanese Irises, Society for Louisiana Iris, Society for Pacific Coast Native Irises, Society for Siberian Irises, Species Iris Group of North America (SIGNA) and Tall Bearded Iris Society, together with local New England clubs, regional mail-order nurseries specializing in Siberian and Japanese irises, and general gardening resources.
