Founded in 1973 by Charley Yaw near Pine Lake, Washington, Charley’s began as a portable-building design shop. In 1975 Charley and his wife Carol mailed their first 16-page black-and-white catalog of hobby greenhouses and supplies to 400 households, and the company launched its first website in 1997. Today the company runs its headquarters, retail store, and ten display greenhouses in the Skagit Valley.

Charley’s carries three distinct greenhouse lines plus a full garden supply store. Cross Country Greenhouses, made by parent company BC Greenhouse Builders, are made-to-order aluminum structures available in more than 4,000 sizes with a lifetime frame warranty. Winter Gardenz, manufactured in New Zealand for 15 years, are budget-friendly ready-to-ship greenhouses offered in four standard backyard sizes with glass or polycarbonate glazing. Heritage Wood Greenhouses are handcrafted in Washington State from premium Grade A Western Red Cedar in 8×8 through 12×20 footprints. The Garden Supply Store stocks pots, propagation mats, grow lights, soils, amendments, and other greenhouse essentials, with a separate Polycarbonate Store for glazing sheets.
Company History
From a 400-copy black-and-white catalog in 1975, Charley’s mailing list grew to over one million U.S. households, and the company became the country’s leading supplier of hobby greenhouse equipment. Greenhouse lines were later sourced from England, Canada, Germany, China, and Denmark. The Heritage Wood cedar line has been in production for more than 20 years, and Charley’s made-to-order cedar greenhouses have been sold for over 25 years. The company joined the BC Greenhouse Builders family to expand its manufacturing capacity while keeping its focus on hobby gardeners.
Community and Customer Programs
Charley’s has decades of experience working with schools and long-term care facilities to design educational and therapeutic greenhouses, providing quotes, drawings, and permitting guidance for grant-funded projects. Every greenhouse purchaser joins the Green Thumb Club, receiving 5% off all future garden supply orders for life and an additional 10% discount during the first six months. Although founders Charley and Carol have retired, the team continues their tradition of personal customer support, sustainable gardening values, and quality craftsmanship.
