About the Foundation
Foundation Willy Böttcher (Stichting Willy Böttcher) is a small family-run clematis nursery in the Flanders region of Belgium, named after the late Belgian clematis breeder Willy Böttcher. Willy and his son Dominiek were active in the clematis world for more than thirty years, picking up awards at trade fairs and exhibitions along the way and earning coverage in the trade press. Willy’s death, a serious traffic accident that sidelined Dominiek and other family circumstances eventually led the two of them to sell the nursery land to their neighbour Jean Marie Dheedene, who formally took over the operation on 1 April 2014.
The New Operator
Jean Marie Dheedene’s motivation in taking over was simple: “the expertise that the father and son had built up should not be lost.” Since then he has attended clematis trade fairs, taken workshops with specialists and breeders and gradually rebuilt the nursery’s variety list and customer network, while keeping the Foundation Willy Böttcher name running. The nursery continues today as a family-style operation that grows, displays and sells clematis, keeping the original line of Belgian-lowland cultivars while adding a few new introductions of its own.
Visiting and Opening Season
The nursery opens to visitors and buyers from 15 March to 15 October each year, by prior phone call. There is parking on site, and the team sets aside time to walk visitors through the stock and talk about variety choice and garden placement. Group visits are welcome on the same basis, and email enquiries are used for advance orders and out-of-hours questions.
Variety Line-Up and Display
The catalogue continues the line that Willy and Dominiek built up over the decades, with an emphasis on well-established Belgian cultivars plus a handful of award winners. The site runs a small “Clematis van de maand” (Clematis of the month) feature that pairs each month’s pick with notes on flower shape, pruning group and garden use. A back catalogue of older photographs and propagation notes is kept online for researchers and garden-history enthusiasts. Current standouts in the sales line include Clematis ‘Princess Kate’ (a.k.a. ‘Zoprika’) and a selection of the early-flowering Atragene (alpina) group.
Website and Bilingual Setup
The nursery’s site is maintained locally and published in both Dutch and French. The Dutch edition uses the foundation domain, while the French edition is served from an older brand domain. The site is deliberately simple — visitors can quickly check the Clematis of the month, browse the catalogue, and either email or phone ahead to book a visit or place an order. The foundation name still sits in the header and footer of the site as a tribute to Willy and Dominiek Böttcher and their thirty-plus years of clematis work.
