Nursery Overview
Lozinka is a private family nursery set in a small, picturesque town in Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine, where the soil and climate suit perennial climbing plants. Its main crops are clematis, along with hydrangea and chrysanthemum; every cultivar the nursery releases has been trial-grown under local conditions, so plants winter over reliably and flower through the summer. The nursery propagates and grows its own stock, supplying private gardens and public green spaces across Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and beyond.
The nursery is run as a family business, with the team handling propagation, field cultivation, online presentation and packing from the same site. Alongside the fields, the family maintains a specialist clematis information website and a sister online shop, where decades of cultivation experience are written up as articles illustrated with photographs from the nursery’s own garden.
Clematis Cultivars and Cultivation
The website lists clematis cultivars grouped by the first letter of their Latin name, with around 260 entries currently available. Each cultivar page gives the country of origin and year of breeding, the raiser’s name, shoot length, leaf and flower description, flowering season, and pruning group, along with photographs taken in the nursery garden at different seasons so enthusiasts can compare the same plant through the year.
In their cultivation notes, the nursery sets out the long-term management of clematis: it is a perennial vine that flowers from April to October; blooms range from single flowers with four or five sepals to fully double forms, with diameters from 3–4 cm up to 25 cm; plants are hardy to minus 30 to 40 °C under a light winter cover; planting sites can range from south-facing to north-facing depending on cultivar, and container culture, ground-cover use and trailing forms are increasingly common. Companion notes on hydrangea and chrysanthemum are kept in parallel columns of the site.
Site Content and Article Columns
The site’s articles are split between a clematis track and a chrysanthemum track, with more than twenty original long articles published so far, including topics such as the clematis care calendar, pruning groups and renewal, balcony and indoor culture, first steps in hybridising, and profiles of distinguished breeders. The nursery has also gathered together its magazine contributions, with articles appearing in Clematis International (UK) every year from 2014 to 2024 and in the Ukrainian gardening magazine Огородник in 2013 and 2014.
The site includes background articles on the international clematis institutions that growers meet in trade journals, such as the International Clematis Society (ICls.), founded in 1984 by Raymond Evison, and its annual journal Clematis International — useful pointers for anyone trying to read cultivar names and cultivation terms. A separate entry on княжики (Atragene, a close relative of clematis) covers species and cultivation in parallel with the main group.
Online Shop and Shipping
The nursery runs a sister online shop on a separate domain, selling the plants it propagates and grows, with the catalogue mirroring the cultivar index on the information site. The shop lists available cultivars in Latin-alphabet order, marking root-ball size and shipping season. Buyers can read the cultivar page on the information site before ordering, which lowers the risk of post-purchase disappointment for newcomers.
The online shop ships both within Ukraine and abroad; postage is tiered by destination, and packaging is designed for long-distance transit with moisture retention and shoot protection. The information site covers the most common questions on packing, dispatch and after-sales, so both sides know what to expect when the parcel arrives. After several seasons, the nursery’s shipping and after-sales routine has settled into a steady rhythm.
Contact and Bespoke Enquiries
The nursery handles cultivar selection advice, cultivation questions and group orders by mail, and is used to replying to detailed enquiries in writing. The team also attends annual clematis society meetings in Ukraine and Europe, swapping rare cultivars and cultivation notes with growers from other regions. The official point of contact is the contact page on the information site and shop, where visitors can write in via the online form or the social accounts listed there.
Visitors planning a trip to the nursery are asked to book through the contact page in advance: the nursery sits in a small town in Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine, where public transport is limited, so driving or hiring a car is the usual way to get there. The nursery garden doubles as a display ground, and during the peak flowering weeks it welcomes visitors who want to compare online catalogue entries against the plants in front of them.
