About the Nursery
J. van Zoest B.V. is a family-run clematis specialist nursery in Boskoop, in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1976 by Lina and Jan van Zoest. In the early years the nursery grew euonymus, hydrangea, a few conifers and some clematis, but in 1996 the whole operation was reshaped when the firm took over the Jan Fopma collection and committed itself exclusively to clematis; the takeover also brought in the seedling hybrids that Wim Snoeijer had been working on. Wim Snoeijer joined the nursery in 2003. Today the nursery grows around five hundred clematis cultivars, of which about four hundred are available for sale.
The In-House Breeding Programme
The nursery runs its own clematis breeding programme, raising seedlings from several hundred controlled crosses each year. From pollination to commercial introduction takes roughly eight years on average, during which a candidate has to satisfy a strict set of criteria: novelty in flower form or colour, a useful flowering window, and a decent flower yield. Only a small fraction of the seedlings make it to market. Among the nursery’s most widely planted recent introductions are ‘Zoang’ (ANGELA) and ‘Zoprika’ (PRINCESS KATE); other recent releases include the GLORIOUS series, plus WELCOME HOME, HAVE FUN and GLORIOUS SURPRISE, several of which are protected by Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR). Around sixty flagship cultivars also carry the GOLD LABEL® trademark, used by wholesale buyers as a product identifier.
Catalogue and Grouping
The website lists the full sale catalogue in an A–Z index and regroups the cultivars by use: a “10 best / easiest” pick for beginners, fragrant clematis, pollinator-friendly clematis, a cutflower range, and a clematis-pruning-group guide (Group 1 / 2 / 3). A separate page explains how to read the label — winter-hardiness zone, mature height, flower form, flowering time — and other pages cover container use, wall planting and cut-flower production. Each year’s introductions from 2014 through 2024 have their own archive pages, so prospective buyers can look back at the nursery’s recent introductions over a decade.
Wholesale Model and Trade Fairs
The nursery sells almost exclusively to wholesale customers, garden centres and export nurseries around Europe, rather than to private walk-in visitors. The firm takes part in Plantarium, the international horticultural trade fair held each year in the Netherlands, and uses the show to debut new cultivars. The website itself is best read as a wholesale catalogue and a reference manual for clematis enthusiasts — it does not sell plants directly and the operators politely decline to identify plants from photographs sent in by email.
Copyright and Plant Protection
The cultivar names, photographs and descriptions on the site are made available for information only; the photographs and descriptions remain the copyright of J. van Zoest B.V. Most of the cultivars the nursery introduces are protected by Plant Breeders’ Rights or Plant Patents, and propagating or trading them as cut flowers without the explicit permission of the rights holder is not permitted.
