Kivistik

About the Farm

Roogoja talu is a family farm in Karla, Kose municipality, Harju County in northern Estonia, and one of the most northerly clematis breeding and growing sites in the world. The 43-hectare property sits on the bank of the Kuivajõe and has been in the Kivistik family since 1899; the fifth generation now lives on the farm. For more than forty years clematis and grapevines have been the core of the business.

The Kivistik Family and Breeding History

Clematis breeding at Roogoja was driven mainly by Uno Kivistik and his wife Aili Kivistik. Uno died in 1998, while Aili continues to work on new varieties at the farm alongside their son Taavi. Between 1979 and 1992 the Kivistiks made more than a thousand controlled crosses using over forty parent varieties, raised some six thousand hybrid seedlings over six-odd years, and selected around two hundred and fifty promising lines for further trials. The hybrids were entered in national variety trials in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and the family is now regarded as one of the most important clematis breeders in the Baltic region. In 2013 Aili received the Golden Clematis Award for a lifetime of work, recognising the 140-plus varieties she and Uno bred together.

Collection and Variety Range

In 1992 the Kivistik family’s collection of large-flowered clematis was recognised as one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The farm holds twenty-three wild clematis species together with more than two hundred and seventy varieties and hybrids, covering the full spectrum from early-spring Atragene alpina types and evergreen New Zealand hybrids through to the late-flowering viticella and texensis groups. One of the earliest landmark varieties, ‘Valge Daam’ (White Lady) from 1980, convinced the Kivistiks that the cross-breeding path was worth pursuing and led directly to the long-running programme that followed. Roogoja varieties are particularly popular in Finland, Sweden, the Baltic states and northern Russia.

Climate and Breeding Goals

As the most northerly known clematis breeding site, Roogoja focuses on producing varieties that flower freely on one-year-old wood and can stand hard winters — conditions forced on the plants by long, cold winters and short, cool summers at this latitude. Varieties that perform reliably here tend to do well in milder western European and North American gardens, which is why Roogoja cultivars are recommended again and again in northern European nursery catalogues. The collection garden comes into its own in early August, when the Kivistik family opens the farm to visitors; foreign guests come mainly from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia and Latvia, with occasional visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan.

Visiting, Mail Order and Contact

The farm opens to the public roughly from 20 July to 20 August each year for visits to the collection garden during peak flowering, while the plant sales season runs from 15 April to 30 September. During the busiest weeks the family is often out at flower fairs around the country and the farm itself is not always staffed. Mail-order for EU destinations opens each year on 1 November, with parcels dispatched from 10 April the following spring. The family also takes part in Estonia’s nationwide Avatud Talud (Open Farms) day in July and in local flower fairs, so enthusiasts often get to talk to the Kivistiks in person about growing clematis in colder climates.
