About Walled Garden Nursery
Walled Garden Nursery is a clematis specialist in Wiltshire, a few miles from the historic town of Malmesbury. Its stated aim is to inspire, inform and tempt in equal measure: clematis and other climbing plants are the main business, alongside current perennials and a selected range of shrubs. The Royal Horticultural Society’s nursery directory lists the speciality in one line — clematis and climbers with a selection of unusual perennials and shrubs — and notes that the site is wheelchair accessible.
Choosing Clematis
The clematis list is split alphabetically across twelve pages from A to V-W, and every entry gives height in feet, flowering months, habit and pruning group. Heights run from compact four-footers to climbers above twelve feet, and the prune group is flagged 1, 2 or 3. Prices sit mostly between about twelve and nineteen pounds fifty a plant. A few entries show the nursery’s taste: ‘Arabella’ is recommended as one of the best, flowering early and finishing late and tolerating hard pruning; ‘alpina Frankie’ carries blue flowers from April to May; ‘alpina Stolwijk Gold’ pairs golden foliage with blue flowers; ‘armandii Apple Blossom’ is a scented evergreen best kept on a south or west wall.
The nursery says a large selection is in stock at any time of year, much of it new introductions or rare species sourced worldwide. Recent additions among the rare species are crispa, viorna and campaniflora.
Perennials and Climbers
Beyond clematis the nursery runs pages of perennials and shrubs, also listed alphabetically and described in the same way — height, flowering period and growing notes rather than pictures alone. Daylily ‘Houssaka’ and Alstroemeria ‘Inca Ice’ both appear. Other climbers have their own page, so a whole wall combination can be assembled from one site.
The Pruning Guide
There is a clematis pruning guide linked from the navigation, and it is the most useful thing on the site for beginners. Clematis rarely fail from planting; they fail from cutting the wrong group, which decides whether next year’s flowers appear at all. The guide works through each of the three groups separately.
Mail Order and Visiting
There is a separate mail order page, though the RHS directory records the nursery as not offering mail order — worth checking by email before ordering. On site, the nursery lies in Brinkworth in Wiltshire, only a few miles from Malmesbury, itself worth a visit for the abbey and the walks; Abbey House Gardens nearby is where many of these plants can be seen growing.
Opening hours are ten to five seven days a week from March to October, with Sunday closing at four; November and February run roughly half past ten to three Monday to Friday, weather dependent, so a call before a long trip is wise. The nursery closes through December and January. Over the years it has grown display plants for the major horticultural shows including Chelsea, taking gold and silver medals, and has appeared on BBC Gardener’s World advising on growing clematis.
