South African National Parks (SANParks) was established in 1926 and is the governmental body responsible for managing South Africa’s national park system. Currently, SANParks oversees 21 national parks and 10 marine protected areas, covering a total area exceeding 44,595 km².

Agency Overview

Headquartered at 643 Leyds Street, Muckleneuk, Pretoria, SANParks employs 4,027 permanent staff and 1,405 temporary workers, with an annual budget of approximately R2.046 billion. The agency operates under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, with Hapiloe Sello serving as Chief Executive Officer.

SANParks is established under the National Parks Act of 1976 and the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act of 2003. Its core mandates include sustainable conservation management, diverse and responsible ecotourism, socio-economic transformation of surrounding communities, and organizational sustainability.

National Parks System

The 21 national parks under SANParks management encompass diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical savannas to alpine grasslands, coastal fynbos to arid deserts. The most renowned is the Kruger National Park, established in 1898, making it South Africa’s oldest and largest national park at nearly 20,000 km², forming transfrontier conservation areas with neighboring Botswana and Mozambique.

Other notable parks include Table Mountain National Park (dominated by Cape Town’s iconic flat-topped mountain), Garden Route National Park (spanning the stunning coastline of the Western Cape), and Agulhas National Park (at Africa’s southernmost tip).

Conservation and Science

SANParks operates a Scientific Services division conducting bulk research and monitoring in biophysical and social sciences across all parks, providing data-driven support for park management. The agency also manages several transfrontier conservation projects, promoting regional ecological cooperation.

Each park offers diverse tourism experiences, from wilderness safaris and nature hikes to luxury tented camps and family resorts, balancing conservation with public education missions.
