Founding and Mandate
The Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) is a nationwide, academic, science-popularising, and non-profit social organisation voluntarily composed of professionals in China’s landscape architecture field. The Society is officially registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, supervised by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and its administrative office is in Beijing. CHSLA traces its early activities back to the years following 1949, and its formal founding congress was held in Hangzhou on 17-20 November 1989, making it one of the most authoritative national academic bodies in the Chinese landscape architecture discipline.
Governance and Membership
The Society operates under the dual academic guidance of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and CAST, and serves as an important academic partner of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in the landscape architecture sector. It hosts a number of specialised committees covering landscape ecological protection, planning and design, landscape plants, history and culture, and engineering technology, together with provincial and municipal societies across the country. The Society’s membership spans universities, design institutes, research bodies, landscape management departments, and enterprises, positioning it as an interdisciplinary and cross-regional academic network for Chinese landscape architecture.
Journals and Publication Platforms
The Society publishes the core Chinese-language monthly journal Chinese Landscape Architecture (Zhongguo Yuanlin, ISSN 1000-6664, CN 11-2165/TU), founded in 1985. It covers landscape planning and design, history and theory, engineering and technology, regulation and management, and plant applications, and is continuously indexed by authoritative databases such as the Chinese Core Journals (Peking University system), the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD), and the Chinese Science and Technology Core Journals. In addition, the Society’s Landscape Ecological Protection Committee hosts the quarterly Landscape Science and Technology journal (founded 1981), adding a complementary publication platform for research, engineering and technology in the field.
Domestic Conferences and Awards
The Society regularly convenes the National Congress of Representatives and the annual academic meeting, and periodically hosts nationwide symposiums, design competitions, and discipline-specific awards in the landscape architecture field, serving as a major annual barometer for the Chinese landscape architecture sector. It administers a series of honours including the CHSLA Landscape Architecture Science and Technology Progress Award, the Outstanding Young Designer Award, and the Outstanding Paper Award, and runs nationwide student landscape design competitions to support education and talent development in the discipline.
International Engagement and Standing
As a national member of IFLA, the Society has long participated in IFLA World Congresses, IFLA Asia-Pacific meetings and other international academic events, and has nominated Chinese scholars for IFLA awards. Through sustained academic exchange with landscape architecture organisations across Asia, Europe and other regions, the Society continues to expand the international presence of Chinese landscape architecture and serves as a window through which Chinese garden culture and contemporary landscape practice are shared with the wider world.
