Organization and History

The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) is Canada’s national not-for-profit federation for the horticulture and landscape industry, bringing together nine provincial landscape and horticulture associations. Its history reaches back to 1922; the Canadian Nursery Trades Association was formally registered in 1972, the organization adopted the CNLA name in 1998, and it marked its centennial in 2022.

National Network and Industry Groups

CNLA represents more than 4,000 members and locally owned businesses involved in growing and selling plants, landscape design, installation, and maintenance. Its national structure includes three commodity groups—Landscape Canada, Growers Canada, and Garden Centres Canada—working with provincial associations to connect growers, garden centres, and landscape professionals.

Member Services and Professional Development

Through advocacy, education, networking, and research communication, CNLA supports the businesses and professionals that make up Canada’s green industry. Member resources include business services, vehicle and equipment programs, insurance, technology and travel benefits, industry training, and agri-marketing grants, together with the Landscape Horticulture Certification Program, Red Seal standards, Clean Plants Certification, and LHCP recertification.

Industry Initiatives and Public Value

CNLA works with provincial associations to advance sustainable prosperity and to communicate the environmental, economic, and lifestyle benefits of horticulture and landscape services. Its initiatives and related programs include Plants Love You, Communities in Bloom, and the Green Cities Foundation, while its national business and landscape awards recognize companies, projects, and individuals that raise professionalism across the sector.

Economic Footprint and Ongoing Work

CNLA states that its member businesses represent more than C$2.2 billion at the farm gate and more than C$14 billion in economic impact in Canada. The association continues to publish industry news, research and reports, publications, and event information, providing a national entry point for standards, professional development, and collaboration in horticulture and landscape.
