Jonas Dupuich《The Little Book of Bonsai》、Harry Harrington《Bonsai 4 Me》系列与《The Ultimate Bonsai Handbook》等经典入门书目;TBS Journals Archive 持续编辑发布协会季刊与年度期刊,记录会员作品、技艺心得与协会大事记。
Historical Evolution and Founding Background
The Toronto Bonsai Society (TBS) is one of the oldest and largest bonsai societies in Canada, formally established in Toronto, Ontario in the mid-1960s by a group of local gardening and bonsai enthusiasts. The Society is dedicated to promoting the local learning and community building of bonsai — an Eastern tradition that fuses horticultural craftsmanship withdesign art — through regular meetings, workshops, lectures and annual exhibitions. Over the past six decades, TBS has upheld the principles of openness, inclusivity, and non-profit operation, with members ranging from complete beginners to seasoned collectors, becoming one of the most active bonsai learning and exchange platforms in eastern North America.
Organizational Structure and Community Ecosystem
The Society operates under a member-driven governance model. An Executive elected by the general membership oversees daily operations, supported by sub-committees covering monthly journal editing, education, exhibitions, social media and member services. TBS holds a Monthly Meeting every month, typically featuring a themed lecture, a bonsai demonstration, a showcase of new trees, and open discussion. Beyond monthly meetings, the Society regularly runs the Bonsai 101 beginner series, beginner/intermediate/advanced workshops, collecting trips and member tree exchange events. The Bonsai Lexicon glossary and the TBS Journals Archive are maintained by member volunteers, recording the Society’s accumulated knowledge and member experiences.
Education, Publications and Annual Programs
TBS has built a comprehensive content system for member education. The Bonsai 101 series runs both virtually and in person, covering ten core topics: Intro to Bonsai, Overwintering, Biology & Horticulture, Aesthetics, Pest Management, Selecting Bonsai Material, Containers, Soil & Repotting, Shaping Your Tree, and Displaying Your Bonsai. The Online Resources library curates classics such as Jonas Dupuich’s《The Little Book of Bonsai》, Harry Harrington’s Bonsai 4 Me titles, and《The Ultimate Bonsai Handbook》. The TBS Journals Archive continuously edits and publishes the Society’s quarterly journal and annual issues, documenting member works, techniques, and Society milestones. TBS holds a major exhibition each spring and fall, showcasing member trees and inviting international guests for live demonstrations and judging.
International Collaboration, Guest Artists and Community Building
The Society invites at least one bonsai master annually from the United States, Europe or Japan to deliver a series of lectures, demonstrations and workshops — a tradition TBS has upheld since its founding. The Society’s 60th Anniversary Exhibition and Sale (autumn 2024), held at the Toronto Botanical Garden, featured internationally renowned bonsai authority William Valavanis, alongside Montréal Botanical Garden bonsai and penjing collection specialists Éric Auger and Marianne Duhammel. The program included Live Demos, Raffles, Workshops, Guided Tours, and a Bonsai Sales Area, becoming a signature annual event for the eastern North American bonsai community. TBS maintains long-term partnerships with the Toronto Botanical Garden, Canadian horticultural associations, and local garden centres, jointly promoting public awareness of the art of bonsai.
Strategic Plans, Partnerships and Member Services
TBS pursues the long-term strategic goal of “advancing the learning, transmission and community exchange of bonsai art”, centered on three pillars: first, continuously improving the Bonsai 101 beginner and advanced education systems to lower the entry barrier for new members; second, strengthening the international guest artist invitation mechanism to maintain TBS’s position as an academic high ground in eastern North America; third, leveraging landmark events such as the 60th Anniversary Exhibition to enhance the Society’s public profile in the Canadiangarden community. Membership is open to individuals and families, offering core benefits including the monthly newsletter, meeting participation, workshop priority and eligibility to exhibit in the annual shows. Specific membership fees, levels and renewal procedures are listed on the official Membership page. Detailed address and meeting venue information are published on the official Schedule and Contact Us pages.
