南澳大利亚地中海花园协会 South Australian Mediterranean Garden Society, 简称 SA MGS, 是国际地中海花园协会 International MGS 在南澳大利亚州的分会。国际地中海花园协会 1994 年由一群来自地中海地区、南澳大利亚等地的园艺爱好者在希腊创立, 总部现设雅典, 目前覆盖 39 个国家, 累计会员超过 1600 人, 官方语言为英语, 并与英国皇家园艺学会 Royal Horticultural Society 建立协作关系。SA MGS 作为南澳州的本地分支, 把地中海气候适应性园艺在南半球持续推广。
气候与植物
地中海气候的典型特征是夏季干热、冬季凉爽、降雨集中在冬春两季, 适合这一气候的全球地区包括地中海盆地、南非开普、智利中南部、加州中部, 以及南澳大利亚。SA MGS 的工作重点是把这些干旱适应型植物引种到南澳的普通花园, 帮助园丁减少灌溉用水, 选用耐旱的常绿骨干植物作为结构, 通过合理规划分组和土壤改良, 让花园在夏季休眠期仍能存活, 两年后基本不再需要人工补水。协会在内部资源手册中整理了会员多年积累的本地栽培经验。
日常活动
SA MGS 每年举行多次非正式会员花园参访, 也安排特别开放给协会参观的私家花园; 双月一次的例会有嘉宾演讲, 议题涵盖土壤管理、植物养护、园林设计到单一物种专题; 季刊把会员文章、书评与活动通告集中出版。入会费 $65 一年, 学生 $30, 例会入场 $5, 花园参访基本免费。会员还可以加入发现花园 Garden of Discovery 的协作劳动, 这个园位于阿德莱德大学 Waite 历史保护区, 由协会长期负责维护。

发现花园 Garden of Discovery 是 SA MGS 的实体基地, 落在阿德莱德大学 Waite 历史保护区范围内, 由协会负责日常管理。园内展示了适合地中海气候的本土与海外植物配置, 是南半球干旱园艺的参考样板, 会员可以在园中亲自动手参与栽培、修剪与季节整理, 也可以带朋友参观来了解地中海气候园艺的实际样貌。这块土地归大学所有, 协会与大学之间长期保持合作安排。

About the Society
The South Australian Mediterranean Garden Society (SA MGS) is the South Australian branch of the International Mediterranean Garden Society. The international body was founded in 1994 in Greece by a small multinational group of gardeners, including members from South Australia. Today it is headquartered in Athens, reaches gardeners in 39 countries with more than 1600 members, operates in English, and maintains a formal connection with the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK. SA MGS carries that network into South Australia.
Climate and Plant Choices
Mediterranean climates share hot dry summers and cool winters, with most rain falling in the cooler months. The five world regions that fit this profile are the Mediterranean basin, the South African Cape, central and southern California, central Chile, and south and southwestern Australia. SA MGS focuses on selecting plants from these regions that are already adapted to dry summers and winter rainfall, so that home gardens can stay attractive through the heat without heavy irrigation. Planting in early autumn, mulching to retain moisture, and grouping plants by water need are core practices that members share in the society’s own resource book.
Meetings, Visits and Newsletter
The society organises informal garden visits to members’ gardens and to private gardens that open especially for the group. Bi-monthly meetings feature guest speakers on soil, plant care, garden design, and individual plant species. A quarterly newsletter gathers news, plant notes, and book reviews. Membership costs AUD 65 per year, with a student rate of AUD 30; meetings cost AUD 5 and garden visits are generally free. Members can also join working days at the Garden of Discovery, the society’s demonstration garden inside the Waite historic precinct of the University of Adelaide.
The Garden of Discovery
The Garden of Discovery is the society’s working base inside the Waite historic precinct of the University of Adelaide. SA MGS has long-term responsibility for the garden, which shows how Mediterranean-climate plants from Australia and overseas can be combined in a South Australian setting. Members contribute to seasonal tasks such as planting, pruning, and mulching, and friends of the society are welcome to visit. The land remains part of the university estate; the arrangement between SA MGS and the university has continued for many years.
Joining and Contact
People in South Australia who want to join can download the SA membership form from the society’s website and submit it through the society’s public contact email. Those who also wish to be members of the international body should register separately through the International Mediterranean Garden Society website. The society’s postal address is held at city level, and day-to-day contact is by email, with the quarterly newsletter, event notices, and meeting reminders all sent to members electronically.
