Association Background and Legal Status
The Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA) is the principal professional body for landscape architects in India. The Society was founded in May 2003 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and is registered under section 21 of the Indian Societies Act, 1860 (registration no. 9557) and section 29 of the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 (registration no. A-9417). It serves as the central self-regulating and outward-facing organisation of the Indian landscape design profession.
International Networks and Asia-Pacific Conferences
ISOLA is a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and has long participated in IFLA-led cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. In cooperation with IFLA, the Society has organised two Asia-Pacific landscape architecture conferences in India, held in Mumbai and in Pune. These two conferences have been important occasions for the Indian landscape design profession to present its work to Asia-Pacific peers and have established the Society’s stable role within the IFLA Asia-Pacific structure.
Regional Chapters and Educational Outreach
The Society operates ten chapters across India, geographically covering the principal cities of the south, west, north, and central parts of the country. The chapters are Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Kerala, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, together with a Students Forum dedicated to current students. The Society maintains a separate Education Board that tracks institutional resources and curricula for landscape design education in India and serves as the dialogue mechanism between universities and the profession.
Awards Scheme and Peer Review
The Society runs an awards scheme that accepts nominations from the broader public, with classes for built projects, research output, and academic contribution. This scheme serves as the most prestigious peer-review mechanism within the Indian landscape design discipline. The Society’s industry updates, code of conduct, and standard operating procedures together form the core of its public peer-review and professional-regulation work and are referenced by members for tenders, promotions, and external communications.
Professional Mission and Public Service
The Society’s mission emphasises three commitments: to nurture and enhance the landscape design discipline through leadership in the design of built, cultural, and natural environments; to promote a high standard of professional service in the application of landscape design as both an art and a science; and to promote and conserve natural resources, the environment, and the landscape, recognising the collective responsibility of landscape architecture to present and future generations. Headquartered in Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujarat, India, the Society has more than 360 members drawn from across the Indian states and other regions of the world, and is among the most publicly transparent professional self-governing bodies in the Indian landscape design profession.
