The African Violet Magazine, published bimonthly for over 70 years, serves as AVSA’s primary member benefit, offering cultivar profiles, cultivation guidance, and hybridization techniques. The society also distributes additional publications through the AVSA Store.

Plant Registration Authority

AVSA is the authorized International Cultivar Registration Authority for Streptocarpus section Saintpaulia (commonly known as African violets). The society maintains the African Violet Master List of Species and Cultivars (AVML) and a First Class computer database, ensuring standardized cultivar nomenclature worldwide.

Affiliates, Conventions and Social Media

AVSA’s network of affiliated clubs across the United States organizes shows, sales, raffles, and in-person events. The society hosts an annual convention and maintains active presence on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube, offering weekly Growing Tips and monthly AVSA News email newsletters.

Research Grants and Conservation

AVSA funds research grants and scholarships supporting African violet conservation and scientific study. In 2009, genetic research reduced the recognized species count from over 20 to 9. In 2015, the International Society for Horticultural Science reclassified Saintpaulia as a subsection of Streptocarpus.
