
历史沿革
台湾植物暨微生物学研究所起源于 1929 年成立的中央研究院自然历史博物馆植物组, 历经 1934 年动植物研究所、1944 年独立为植物学研究所等多次机构重组。1949 年中央研究院迁台, 1954 年起在李先闻博士主持下着手于台湾复所筹备, 并于 1962 年正式在台北南港园区复所挂牌。1962 年起, 该所与 IAEA、IRRI 及美国农业部等机构合作, 推动了水稻细胞遗传学、辐射诱变育种及竹笋糖类代谢等早期研究。2005 年, 经中央研究院院务会议通过, 正式更名为植物暨微生物学研究所, 同时扩建七层农业科技大楼, 与农业生物科技研究中心共享研究空间。
研究领域与核心设施
目前该所下设 4 大核心研究领域: 一、染色体、基因组与系统生物学, 整合超高分辨率光学显微镜与影像自动化处理, 在环境逆境下探析基因调控机制; 二、细胞与发育生物学, 聚焦代谢调控、信号转导与生长控制等关键机制; 三、植物与环境交互作用, 解析植物对光、温、旱、养分等动态环境因子的响应网络; 四、植物与环境微生物学, 涵盖种原收集、微生物多样性分析与分子植物免疫研究。该所专任研究员 26 人, 加上博士后、博士及硕士生等研究人员约 200 人, 并配备多间现代化核心实验室与世界级仪器设施。
科研团队与人才培养
现任所长为賴爾珉博士, 自 2025 年 1 月起接任, 此前历任所长包括吴素幸博士 (2018-2024)、陈荣芳博士 (2013-2018)、Anthony Huang (2010-2012)、林纳生博士 (2008-2009)、贺端华博士 (2003-2008)、萧介夫博士 (1996-2003)、杨祥发博士 (1996)、周昌弘博士 (1989-1996) 等多位杰出学者。人才培养方面, 该所与中央研究院国际研究生学位学程 (TIGP) 及台湾大学、成功大学等岛内主要大学合作, 提供博士、硕士学程学额, 学生可透过本所研究人员的指导攻读学位, 同时积极参与国内外学术训练课程。

该所近年发表多项代表性研究成果, 在国际期刊上具有重要影响力。林纳生研究员的兰花 Odontoglossum ringspot virus 与 Cymbidium mosaic virus 小 RNA 基因体研究, 登载于 Molecular Plant Pathology; 贺端华团队的植物逆境分子机制探索发表于 PNAS; Yuki Nakamura 团队发现花粉受精的关键油脂信号机制, 刊于 The Plant Cell; Pao-Yang 陈博士关于拟南芥表观基因体预测蛋白协同作用的论文, 收录于 Nature Communications; Chih-Hang 吴博士关于植物免疫受体网络扩张的研究, 同样是国际植物科学前沿成果。该所每年所发表的研究论文在质与量上同步提升, 已成为亚太地区植物科学的重要研究中心。
国际合作与学术交流
该所国际学术谘询委员会由 10 位国际杰出学者组成, 召集人为加州大学戴维斯分校基因组中心主任 Blake Meyers, 委员包括美国加州大学 Riverside 分校的 Julia Bailey-Serres、加州大学圣地亚哥分校 HHMI 教授 Susan Golden、冷泉港实验室的 David Jackson、密歇根州立大学的 Robert Last 与 Jan Leach、日本京都大学 Takayuki Kohchi、英国 Sainsbury Laboratory 的 Nick Talbot、荷兰瓦赫宁恩大学的 Dolf Weijers, 并有新任成员密歇根州立大学的 Shin-Han Shiu 于 2026 年 9 月加入。此外, 该所亦定期与加州大学洛杉矶分校、京都大学、东京大学等机构推动双边研讨会, 持续深化与国际间顶尖植物暨微生物学实验室的合作关系。
Historical Evolution
The Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology (IPMB) traces its origin to the Botany Division of the National Museum of Natural History, Academia Sinica, founded in Nanjing in spring 1929. It evolved through the National Institute of Zoology and Botany (1934), became the independent Institute of Botany in 1944, was reestablished in Taiwan in 1962 under Dr. Hsien-Wen Li, and adopted its current name IPMB in 2005. Early collaborations with the IAEA, the International Rice Research Institute, and the United States Department of Agriculture supported foundational research in rice cytogenetics, radiation-induced mutation breeding, and bamboo shoot carbohydrate metabolism.
Research Areas and Core Facilities
IPMB is organized around four major research areas: Chromosome, Genome, and Systems Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Plant-Environment Interactions; and Plant and Environmental Microbiology. The institute hosts more than 20 research laboratories supported by several state-of-the-art core facilities, including super-resolution optical microscopy, automated image processing, and a Scanning Electron Microscope (Zeiss GeminiSEM 360). Approximately 200 researchers—postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master students, project researchers, and research assistants—work alongside over 20 administrative staff to sustain a vibrant interdisciplinary environment.
Research Team and Talent Training
The institute is led by Director Erh-Min Lai (2025.1-present), with a lineage of distinguished predecessors including Shu-Hsing Wu, Long-Fang Chen, Anthony Huang, Na-Sheng Lin, Tuan-Hua Ho, Jei-Fu Shaw, Shang-Fa Yang, and Chang-Hung Chou. IPMB actively mentors the next generation of plant scientists through the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) of Academia Sinica and partnerships with leading universities, offering Ph.D. and master’s research opportunities under the supervision of senior faculty members.
Representative Research Achievements
Representative publications include Na-Sheng Lin’s small-RNA analysis of Odontoglossum ringspot virus and Cymbidium mosaic virus in Phalaenopsis (Molecular Plant Pathology, 2020), Yuki Nakamura’s discovery of a key lipid signal mechanism for pollen fertilization (The Plant Cell, 2020), Pao-Yang Chen’s epigenome-based prediction of protein synergistic effect in Arabidopsis (Nature Communications, 2024), and Chih-Hang Wu’s study of plant immune receptor network expansion (The Plant Cell, 2024). Outputs across the Nature Plants, Nature Communications, The Plant Cell, The Plant Journal, and Genome Biology families illustrate IPMB’s sustained impact on plant and microbial biology.
International Collaboration and Academic Exchange
IPMB’s Academic Advisory Committee is convened by Blake Meyers (Genome Center, University of California, Davis) and includes Julia Bailey-Serres (UC Riverside), Susan Golden (UC San Diego), David Jackson (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), Robert Last (Michigan State University), Jan Leach (Colorado State University), Takayuki Kohchi (Kyoto University), Nick Talbot (The Sainsbury Laboratory), Dolf Weijers (Wageningen University), and Shin-Han Shiu (joining in September 2026, Michigan State University). IPMB also co-organizes bilateral symposia with leading institutions and hosts annual TIGP and AS-KAIST workshops to cultivate international exchange.
