Hemingway Nursery is a family-run daylily specialty nursery in Hemingway, South Carolina. Carrying on the breeding lineage of the original Roycroft Daylilies, it is run today by Scott and Lucille Williams. The nursery opened to the public in March 2020 and is officially recognized as an American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) National Display Garden, promoting home gardening and new cultivar introductions across the South Carolina Pee Dee agricultural region.
Family Heritage and Brand History
The nursery traces back to the original Roycroft Daylilies founded in Georgetown, relocated to its current Hemingway address, and opened to the public in March 2020 under Scott and Lucille Williams. It carries forward the Roycroft breeding lineage while continually introducing cultivars suited to home gardens, and has been recognized by the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) as an official National Display Garden.
Cultivar Scale and Hardiness Zones
The property holds more than 80 raised display beds, each labeled with metal markers identifying the hybridizer behind every cultivar. Hundreds of cultivars are sourced from breeders across the country, ranging from classic staples to recent doubles, spiders, unusual forms, polymerous types and reliable rebloomers, so visitors can trace the breadth of the daylily breeding spectrum in one walk. Cultivars are field-tested across USDA Zone 3 through Zone 9, with Zone 7 and Zone 8 representing the sweet spot. Zone ratings are intentionally conservative: where a listing says Zone 6, the plant has been confirmed to overwinter without relying on snow cover or heavy mulch.
Hours and Visitor Guide
The nursery is open to the public during bloom season, typically late April through June, with exact timing depending on the season’s weather. Visiting hours are Thursday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. A fall replanting season runs September 1 through the end of October, while July and August are closed for the summer. Wagons are available at the entrance so guests can roll their selections to the car. Beyond bare-root orders, the nursery carries potted daylilies that are already growing and even blooming during the season, ideal for visitors who want to see exactly what they are taking home. Located 53 miles west of Myrtle Beach and 83 miles north of Charleston, the nursery is often combined with a stop at Scott’s Bar-B-Que, a South Carolina institution that has been smoking whole hogs over wood coals since 1972.
Ordering, Shipping, Guarantee and Grower Support
All orders ship with a minimum of two fans, with bare-root plants lifted, manicured, treated against fungal and bacterial issues and packed within 24 hours, so customers receive large, healthy plants ready for the garden. Credit cards are not charged until the week of shipment, and there is no surcharge for using a credit card. Every plant carries a one-year guarantee: if a daylily fails to thrive for any reason, a replacement is shipped upon request, with the buyer only covering the replacement’s shipping cost. Planting guidance is straightforward — wait until after the last spring frost before transplanting, and aim to finish fall planting at least six weeks before the first expected frost so roots can anchor. Daylilies are classified by chromosome count as diploids (22 chromosomes) or tetraploids (44); tetraploids generally give larger, more richly colored blooms with thicker petals, while diploids tend toward finer, more graceful forms. Rebloomers send up multiple scapes per season, and the difference between dormant and evergreen foliage guides late-season cleanup. Routine care is hands-off: avoid overwatering, delay division until clumps are well established, and the plants thrive on benign neglect from both new and experienced gardeners.
