Company History and Family Stewardship

Espoma began in 1929 when Herbert Sanders started the company in Millville, New Jersey, with one all-purpose organic fertilizer made from natural ingredients. A major plant fire in 1946 tested the young business, but the local community helped the company recover and continue production. In 1949, Sanders developed a fertilizer for hollies and other acid-loving plants that became the company’s signature product and remains one of its best-known offerings. Dean Sanders joined the business in 1953, Serge Brunner joined in 1977, and Jeremy Brunner joined the family company in 1997. The official history records a gradual move from manual production to semi-automated and fully automated blending and packaging. Espoma remains family-owned, with a multi-generation tradition built around organic gardening, product consistency, and long-term stewardship.

Organic Product Portfolio

Espoma serves home gardeners, lawn owners, indoor plant growers, and professional horticultural customers through a broad product portfolio. Its official product categories include garden fertilizers, soil mixes, lawn fertilizers, liquid fertilizers, single-ingredient plant foods, and conventional fertilizers. Garden fertilizers are formulated with natural ingredients and beneficial microbes, while soil products include potting soils, garden soils, and amendments. Liquid products combine natural proteins and beneficial microbes with a convenient measuring design. Espoma also provides a product selector and plant-care resources that organize recommendations around flowers, fruits and vegetables, trees and shrubs, houseplants, and lawns. This structure positions the company as a complete organic gardening resource rather than a single-product fertilizer manufacturer.

Manufacturing and Sustainability

Sustainability is central to Espoma’s current operating model. The company reports that its manufacturing facility is powered entirely by solar energy, with panels covering approximately 67,000 square feet and producing more than 810,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. The system is reported to save more than 1.6 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Espoma also emphasizes minimal-waste manufacturing, recycling of skids and damaged pallets, plant-based resin in selected fertilizer bags, and participation in the USDA BioPreferred program. Its Millville headquarters includes a green-energy facility and a living green wall made from 672 plants. In 2025, Espoma opened a newer manufacturing facility in Hegins, Pennsylvania, designed to dehydrate and granulate raw materials with an annual capacity of approximately 260 million pounds of organic fertilizer.

Family Leadership and Facilities

Espoma’s development has been shaped by successive generations of the Sanders and Brunner families. Herbert Sanders established the original business; Dean Sanders expanded the Tone product family and advanced automation; Serge Brunner computerized and expanded operations and serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board; and Jeremy Brunner expanded nationwide distribution and added product lines. Jaime Brunner works in marketing. The company operates facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Millville remains the original manufacturing location and headquarters, while the Hegins facility adds modern processing capacity and locally sourced raw materials. The company’s history combines family leadership, manufacturing investment, and ongoing product development.

Distribution and Customer Resources

Espoma products are available nationwide through independent garden centers, national retailers, and third-party online retailers, although the assortment varies by location. Espoma recommends asking a local garden center about special orders when a specific product is not on the shelf. The official website also provides a product selector, plant-care guidance, frequently asked questions, and current purchasing information. These resources help customers choose products by plant type and gardening goal while keeping local availability in view. For current product lines, retailer information, facility updates, and customer-support options, the official Espoma website remains the authoritative source.
