Logee’s Greenhouses由William D. History and Family Legacy

Logee’s Greenhouses was founded in 1892 by William D. Logee in Danielson, Connecticut, originally as a cut-flower business that quickly pivoted to tropicals and unusual plants. In 1900, William purchased a small Ponderosa Lemon tree (the “American Wonder Lemon,” capable of producing 5-pound fruits) from a Philadelphia grower; the tree was shipped by train and then horse-and-buggy to the property, planted directly in the ground of the original greenhouse, and still grows in what is now called the “Lemon Tree House,” reliably producing five-pound lemons every year and serving as the propagation source for countless young trees. William fathered 13 children, the eldest being Ernest, who developed a passion for horticulture and focused on container-grown tropicals so that gardeners in northern zones could grow exotic plants. Ernest became a leading begonia hybridizer, creating the “Mother Goose Series” (Lucy Locket, Pied Piper, Goldie Locks, Mother Goose, Pistachio), and was a co-founder of the American Begonia Society, where he established the Buxton Branch in Massachusetts. Byron married Laurelynn Glass Martin in the 1990s; although they are no longer married, they remain best friends and co-owners of Logee’s. Their two children, Elijah Martin and Angel Martin, represent the fourth generation. Laurelynn holds a Master’s degree and came from a business, marketing, communications, and writing background; she led the rebrand to “Growers Since 1892 selling Fruiting, Rare and Tropical plants,” secured multiple energy-efficiency and solar grants, and is most proud of growing the company through its people. Byron is an avid beekeeper with seven apiaries, producing raw unfiltered honey sold on site.
