Overview
The China Virtual Botanical Garden (CVBG) is a national-level plant garden information sharing platform led by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The platform integrates digital resources from 164 botanical gardens across China, achieving integrated management of basic geographic information, plant digitization, ecological environment analysis, scientific research, business management, science education, and tourism services.
Platform Background
The China Virtual Botanical Garden project aims to eliminate “information islands” and “information barriers” in traditional botanical garden informatization, unify digital botanical garden technology platforms, and achieve a national digital botanical garden alliance. The platform has established unified plant management information specifications and metadata standards, integrated existing information and computer network resources, and provided network automation environments for various business management and decision-making.
Resource Integration Scale
The platform includes information from 164 Chinese botanical gardens, including the National Botanical Garden, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Nanjing Zhongshan Botanical Garden, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Kunming Botanical Garden, South China National Botanical Garden, and Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, covering 1,820 specialized gardens, 1,263 protected plant species, 38,000 planted specimens, and 2,345,000 plant images.
Key Member Highlights
National Botanical Garden is located in Haidian District, Beijing, founded in 1956 and officially inaugurated in 2022. With a total planned area of nearly 600 hectares divided into South and North gardens, it currently has about 300 hectares open to the public, collecting 17,500 plant species including nearly 1,000 rare and endangered species.
Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is a comprehensive research institution under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in 1959. It occupies approximately 1,125 hectares, collecting more than 13,000 living plant species with 39 specialized garden areas and preserving approximately 250 hectares of primary tropical rainforest. It is China’s largest botanical garden in area, species richness, and number of specialized gardens.
Nanjing Zhongshan Botanical Garden traces its origins to the Central Research Academy’s Natural History Museum and the “Premier’s Mausoleum Memorial Botanical Garden” established in 1929. Reconstructed and renamed in 1954, it now occupies 186 hectares within the Purple Mountain Scenic Area in Nanjing, serving as a comprehensive modern botanical garden integrating scientific research, science popularization, and tourism.
