History and Governance

The Gesellschaft Schweizerischer Rosenfreunde (GSRF, Society of Swiss Rose Friends) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to rose horticulture, breeding, and garden culture in Switzerland. Founded on 23 May 1959, the GSRF has served Swiss rosarians for over 67 years. The society is headquartered in Stüsslingen, Canton Solothurn, and is led by President Behcet Ciragan, with a board that includes Secretary Dr. Elmar Zwicker, Treasurer Nick Kienast, editor and webmaster Brigitt Buser, and board member Annemarie Muriset. Today the GSRF counts more than 1,500 individual and family members across the German-, French-, and Italian-speaking regions of Switzerland.

Publications and the 2026 Annual Theme

Two publications anchor the society’s editorial programme. The monthly Rosenblatt delivers practical cultivation advice, society news, and event previews from the regional groups. The annual Rosa Helvetica is a yearbook of in-depth articles by Swiss and international authors. Annual themes have included “Roses and Companion Plants” (2020), “Biodiversity and Climate Change” (2021), “Small-Space and Balcony Roses” (2022), “Climbing and Rambler Roses” (2023), and “Roses in Swiss History and Art” (2024). For 2026 the annual theme is “Schweizer Rosen” (Swiss Roses), showcasing varieties bred in Switzerland: the red bedding rose ‘André’ (Richard Huber AG, 2017), the cream-yellow shrub rose ‘Leilani’ (Sharlene Sutter, Thurgau, 2016), the red climber ‘Schloss Haldenstein’ (Hans Wüest, Horw, named 2003 at Haldenstein Castle in Graubünden), and the shrub rose ‘Domenikus’ (Richard Huber).

Regional Groups and Open Garden Days

The GSRF operates through nine Regionalgruppen that together form the backbone of its event network: Aargau, Basel Regio, Bern, March Glarnerland, Schaffhausen, Spiez / Berner Oberland, St. Gallen Region, Thurgau, and Zürich. Members may attend events organized by any of the regional groups. Each group independently runs pruning workshops (Schnittkurs), garden trips (Gartenreisen), specialist nursery visits, and lectures, while the society as a whole coordinates the annual Jahrestagung (general assembly) and the national Open Garden Days (Tage der offenen Gärten). The 2026 programme features more than fifty events between 12 and 28 June, including private garden openings in Basel Land, Zürich, and Aargau, the Meiers Rosenfest rose festival, the Bischofszeller Rosenwoche in Thurgau, and a multi-day rose trip to the Black Forest in Germany. The GSRF also cooperates with public Swiss rose gardens such as Rosengarten Schloss Wildegg on volunteer-led conservation projects.

Membership and Swiss Rose Heritage

Membership is structured by category: Einzelmitglied (individual) CHF 55 per year, Paarmitglied (couple) CHF 75, and Firmenmitglied (company or institutional) CHF 50. Members receive the monthly Rosenblatt, the annual Rosa Helvetica, access to all nine regional groups’ activities, and entry to the society’s Facebook community. The 2026 programme also revisits the heritage rose Rosa centifolia ‘Cristata’ (a.k.a. ‘Chapeau de Napoléon’ and ‘Crested Moss’), reportedly found around 1820 on a monastery wall in Fribourg, reflecting the society’s long-standing commitment to Swiss rose heritage alongside its modern breeding showcase.
