EGL 以 “城市–自然–人” 整体观为基础,业务划分为 Städtebau(城市设计)、Freiraum(开放空间设计)、Landschaft & Umwelt(景观与环境规划)三大版块。

Company History

EGL – Entwicklung und Gestaltung von Landschaft GmbH was founded in 1969 in Kassel, Germany, by Prof. Günther Grzimek, Arnim Koch and Jan Michael Runge as the “EGL-Entwicklungsgruppe Landschaftskultur” association. In 1974 the studio reorganised into a partnership-style “EGL – Entwicklungsgruppe für Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH”, codifying its “Mitarbeiter:innen-GmbH” model in which every co-worker can become a partner and shares equal entrepreneurial responsibility. In 1982 the name was officially changed to the present-day “EGL – Entwicklung und Gestaltung von Landschaft GmbH”, signalling the studio’s long-term focus on landscape design, urban planning and environmental planning across the German-speaking region.

Service Scope

EGL organises its work around the integrated view of city, nature and people, with three practice clusters: Städtebau (urban design) covering feasibility studies, framework plans, land-use plans, urban development concepts and Bebauungsplan procedures; Freiraum (open space design) covering the full chain from site analysis to built realisation, including stormwater management, climate-adaptation greening, sports facilities, educational and childcare outdoor spaces, park and green-space design, façade and roof greening, BIM coordination and competition work; and Landschaft & Umwelt (landscape and environmental planning) covering UVP/SUP environmental reports, FFH management plans, species and biotope mapping, Umweltbaubegleitung ecological supervision and related specialist studies.

Organisational Model

EGL operates as a co-worker-owned “Mitarbeiter:innen-GmbH” with more than 50 staff distributed across six regional offices in Landshut, Erlangen, Kassel, Düsseldorf, Lüneburg and Hamburg. Its interdisciplinary team brings together landscape architects, urban planners, environmental scientists, biologists, Umweltbaubegleitung specialists and construction management experts. The studio is led by a democratically elected, rotating Geschäftsführung (managing director) team, and all strategic decisions are taken collectively at the Gesellschafterversammlung (partners’ assembly), making EGL a widely cited reference for non-hierarchical governance in the German landscape architecture sector.

Representative Projects

Across its six regional offices EGL delivers continuous landscape, urban and environmental planning services for public and private clients. The portfolio covers historic-city open-space renewal, climate-adaptive green-space and stormwater design, Artenschutzrechtliche Fachbeiträge species-protection studies, Landschaftspflegerische Begleitpläne landscape maintenance plans, and outdoor environments for educational and childcare institutions. The studio maintains long-standing teaching ties with institutions such as the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Kassel, hosts an annual cross-office Bürotreffen and a partners’ assembly – most recently in Kassel in 2025 – and started its 2026 Kartiersaison (biotope-mapping season) in March.

Industry Influence

As one of Europe’s longest-running Mitarbeiter:innen-GmbH landscape studios, EGL has shaped the German-speaking landscape architecture and ecological-planning discourse for more than 55 years by consistently translating the “Demokratisierung des Grüns” idea into practice. Its cross-regional collaboration model has been widely discussed as an Alleinstellungsmerkmal in German landscape-architecture reviews and frequently appears as a case study in German planning-school curricula. From its 1997 base inside the FiDT Technologie- und Gründerzentrum in Kassel to the Elbe–Heide ecological corridor work led from Lüneburg, EGL continues to serve as a reference for democratic, ecologically grounded and cross-disciplinary landscape practice.
