协会由来

新西兰水仙花协会 (National Daffodil Society of New Zealand, 简称 NDSNZ) 成立于 1926 年 9 月, 创立大会在 Lower Hutt 举行, 创会秘书长 W.A. Grace 当年与全国约 400 位水仙花栽培者保持联系; 1927 年 9 月 14-15 日在 Lower Hutt 镇政厅举办首届全国水仙花展, 南岛首届展览同年 9 月 27 日在 Oamaru 钻堂举行。1898 年惠灵顿园艺学会率先举办水仙花专科展览, 1926 年全国性协会成立, 这一百多年来, NDSNZ 一直负责推动新西兰境内水仙花品种的栽培、欣赏与保育。

组织架构与会员

NDSNZ 是由全国水仙花爱好者与商业种植者共同组成的会员制非营利组织, 涵盖专业花卉种植户、业余爱好者、植物学家与初学者等不同群体。新西兰各地设有区域代表 (Area Representatives), 负责会员与协会之间的联络, 北岛与南岛各设一个区域俱乐部联盟, 包括 Central Daffodil Group、Northern Daffodil Club (覆盖 Waikato 与 Bay of Plenty)、Taranaki Daffodil Club 等。南岛方面则包含 Marlborough、Nelson Bays、Otago 与 South Canterbury 等地方团体, 区域俱乐部一年举办数次聚会与小型展览。

年度全国花展

NDSNZ 每年春季分别在北岛和南岛各举办一场全国水仙花展 (National Show)。2025 年南岛全国花展冠军花 (Champion Bloom) 为 Aaron Russ 选育的 ‘Ja May’, 亚军为 Miller Daffodils 的 ‘AR 12-01B’。2026 年第 100 届北岛全国花展将于 9 月 19-20 日在 Hamilton Gardens Pavilion 举行, 对公众开放时间为周六下午 1:00-4:00 与周日 10:00-16:00。除了 Champion Bloom 之外, 每朵参赛花还可竞争各 Special Exhibition Categories 与 Daffodil Classifications 分类奖项。

奖项与荣誉

NDSNZ 设四类荣誉, 包括终身会员 (Life Member, 最高荣誉)、以已故知名育种者 David Bell 命名的金奖与铜奖, 以及 2008 年开始颁发的 Certificate of Recognition。提名表可在协会网站 NDS Forms 页面下载, 现任终身会员包括 David Adams、Benjamin Blake、John Hunter、Denise McQuarrie、Lesley Ramsay 与 Nancy Tackett 等。协会同时负责新西兰水仙花新品种的注册与登录, 协助会员向英国皇家园艺学会 (RHS) 国际水仙花登录机构提交品种资料。

栽培与公众参与

新西兰大部分地区都适合水仙花栽培, 仅最北端 Far North 需特殊处理 (如 Kerikeri 一带的商业苗圃在沙土中掺入壤土并选择阴凉处种植)。NDSNZ 推荐新手就近参观本地水仙花展, 直接向种植者请教品种选择与采购。协会在 Bulb Sources 页面列出Boggyburn Daffodils、Davey Gardens、Fisher Nurseries、Mercervale Daffodils、G. & F. Miller Daffodils、Templeton Daffodils 等新西兰本土育种商, 涵盖 Te Awamutu、Balclutha、Christchurch、Timaru、Winton 等产区, 公众可通过区域俱乐部代表或 Honorary Secretary (现为 Trevor Rollinson) 进一步联系。

Origins of the Society

The National Daffodil Society of New Zealand (NDSNZ) was founded in September 1926, with its inaugural meeting held in Lower Hutt; founding secretary W.A. Grace reported that he had been in constant contact with around 400 daffodil growers across the country. The first National Show took place at the Lower Hutt Town Hall on 14-15 September 1927, while the first South Island Show was held at the Drill Hall in Oamaru on 27 September of the same year. Wellington Horticultural Society had staged the country’s first dedicated daffodil exhibition in 1898, and the 1926 formation brought these regional efforts under a single national body that has now continued for a century.

Membership and Regional Structure

NDSNZ is a membership-based non-profit open to professionals, amateurs, experienced botanists and beginning gardeners. Area representatives liaise between members and the Society across both islands. North Island groups include the Central Daffodil Group, the Northern Daffodil Club (covering Waikato and the Bay of Plenty) and the Taranaki Daffodil Club. South Island groups include the Marlborough Daffodil Group, Nelson Bays Daffodil Group, Otago Daffodil Club and South Canterbury Daffodil Group. Most clubs meet several times a year and stage table shows, while the Northern club hosts two shows annually and an annual Christmas Party (individual dues NZD 10, family NZD 15).

Annual National Shows

Each spring NDSNZ holds two flagship National Shows, one in the North Island and one in the South Island. The 2025 South Island Champion Bloom was ‘Ja May’, exhibited by Aaron Russ, with the Reserve Champion being ‘AR 12-01B’ from Miller Daffodils. The 100th Annual North Island National Show is scheduled for 19-20 September 2026 at the Hamilton Gardens Pavilion on Cobham Drive, Hamilton, open to the public on Saturday 1:00pm-4:00pm and Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm. Beyond Champion Bloom, exhibitors compete in Special Exhibition Categories and across the full Daffodil Classifications table.

Awards and Honours

NDSNZ maintains four prestigious awards: Life Member (the highest honour), the David Bell Gold Medal, the David Bell Bronze Medal (both named after the renowned late New Zealand daffodil raiser) and the Certificate of Recognition, introduced in 2008. Nomination forms are available from the NDS Forms page or from Honorary Secretary Trevor Rollinson. Current Life Members include David Adams (Christchurch), Benjamin Blake (California), John Hunter (Hope), Denise McQuarrie (Lincoln), Lesley Ramsay (Cambridge) and Nancy Tackett (California). The Society also assists members with cultivar registration through the RHS international daffodil register.

Cultivation and Public Participation

Daffodils grow successfully across almost all of New Zealand; the Far North is the only region needing extra steps such as introducing loamy soil and planting in cool, shady spots, as practiced by the commercial nursery at Kerikeri. NDSNZ encourages newcomers to attend their local show first, where growers are happy to share expertise.
