Origins and Mission
The National Garden Scheme (NGS) was started in 1927 by Eleanor Ansdeall in Quainton, Buckinghamshire, initially as a small fundraiser for the Queen’s Institute of District Nursing. By 1930, 900 gardens had opened to visitors, and the first NGS Handbook in 1932 listed 1079 gardens. From 1980, NGS became an independent charity funding a wider range of nursing and health causes.
Charitable Scale and Beneficiaries
Over nearly a century, NGS has raised more than 77.8 million pounds through garden admissions, donations and volunteer effort. In 2025 alone, around 3.8 to 3.9 million pounds was donated to nursing and health charities. Core beneficiaries include Carer’s Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Parkinson’s UK and the Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing, alongside project grants for organisations such as Horatio’s Garden and Maggie’s.
Garden Visiting and Find a Garden
Today NGS lists more than 3,500 private gardens across England and Wales, most open between February and October. Visitors use the Find a Garden tool on the NGS website to filter by location, date and garden type, with full open-day details and ticket links.
Research and Garden-and-Health Advocacy
Since commissioning the King’s Fund Gardens and health report in 2016, NGS has continued to fund research into the physical and mental health benefits of gardens, hosting the annual Gardens and Health Week each May. Survey findings show 7 in 10 bereaved people find time in nature helpful, and the 190-plus Virtual Garden Visits produced during lockdown kept the public connected to gardens when in-person openings were paused.
Centenary and the 2027 Collection
NGS will mark its centenary in 2027 and has partnered with British growers including Harkness Roses, Raymond Evison, Frank P Matthews and Wordsworth daffodils on a Centenary Collection. The Lemon Drizzle rose launched at the RHS Sandringham Flower Show, donating 2.50 pounds per plant, while Raymond Evison’s Clematis Queen’s Nurse was shortlisted for Plant of the Year at RHS Chelsea in 2026.
