About the Nursery
Abriachan Garden Nursery is a family-run plant nursery on the western shore of Loch Ness, between Inverness and Drumnadrochit along the A82. Don and Margaret Davidson began laying out the garden and nursery in 1983, after returning to Scotland from the Falkland Islands, and the plantings have since worked their way up the hillside and merged with the surrounding native woodland. Today Don and Margaret run the nursery together with their son Hamish; Margaret, who trained in horticulture, looks after the planting plans, while Don focuses on the dry-stone walls and the nursery side of the work. Two team members, Rebecca and SJ, handle the hands-on propagation and day-to-day plant care.
Plant Collections & Specialities
The nursery specialises in hardy plants suited to Scottish conditions, with a particular emphasis on rare and unusual shrubs, perennials and alpines. The Auricula primula collection is widely regarded as one of the strongest in the country, and the nursery’s main plant listings are recorded in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Plant Finder. The garden and nursery have been featured on the BBC Scotland programme Beechgrove Garden and in a number of mainstream gardening magazines.
Garden & Visits
The woodland garden is small but steep, with paths edged by mossy stone walls leading up the hillside to open views over Loch Ness. The plantings mix native and exotic species and run from damp shaded corners to sunnier slopes. The garden is a member of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and opens under the Scheme’s standard arrangements. Self-guided visits are charged at £4 per person, while private guided tours for groups of five to ten are £10 per person, lasting 45 minutes to an hour and arranged in advance.
Nursery & Markets
The nursery opens every day from 9 am to 5 pm between February and November (exact hours are listed on the website). Stock focuses on hardy perennials, shrubs and alpines selected for Highland conditions, with the Auricula collection being the headline range. Hamish attends a different local market across the Highlands most weekends, where he also sells his Christmas wreaths; visitors who drop in during the week usually meet Rebecca and SJ at the nursery bench.
Visitor Notes & Contact
Visitors should note that the paths climb steep woodland slopes and steps, so the garden is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, and dogs are welcome on leads. Plants sold on site are chosen for Scottish Highland conditions, covering perennials, shrubs, alpines and the Auricula primula range. The nursery is run by the Davidson family with two colleagues, and all bookings and enquiries are handled through the website.
