此外还有ThreatSearch(濒危物种威胁数据库)和GlobalTreeSearch(全球树种搜索工具)等数据库,共同构成完整的植物保护信息体系。

Overview

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is the world’s largest international plant conservation organization, established in 1987 as an independent UK charity. BGCI’s mission is to mobilize botanic gardens and engage partners to secure plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet, representing botanic gardens in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Headquartered in London, BGCI operates through regional offices in China, the United States, Singapore, Kenya, Russia and other countries, delivering the goals of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) at global, regional, national and local levels.

Membership and Organizational Scale

BGCI is a membership organization with over 800 member institutions and individual members from more than 120 countries, including botanic gardens, research institutions and conservation practitioners. This extensive network enables BGCI to汇聚 global expertise in plant conservation and form a powerful collaborative force for plant protection worldwide.

BGCI aims to support and empower its members and the wider conservation community to apply their knowledge and expertise to reversing the threat of extinction facing plants. The organization’s annual Year in Review reports showcase achievements across all areas of plant conservation.

Global Strategy for Plant Conservation

BGCI promotes the development and implementation of global plant conservation policy, with particular focus on the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). Now in its third phase, GSPC is fully aligned with the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The GSPC 2020-2030 contains 41 Voluntary Complementary Actions related to 21 KMGBF targets.

As a catalytic force, BGCI delivers GSPC objectives through providing resources and publications, organizing international conferences and training workshops, and implementing direct plant conservation programs.

Global Databases

BGCI maintains four globally unique databases essential for plant conservation:

PlantSearch is the only global database of living plant species in botanic gardens and similar organizations, containing over 1.54 million records representing approximately 365,470 taxa from 1,135 institutions worldwide. It serves as the most important information-sharing platform for the botanic garden community.

GardenSearch is the only global database of botanic gardens, with profiles of approximately 3,199 botanic gardens worldwide including descriptions, locations and specific resources. Additional databases including ThreatSearch and GlobalTreeSearch complete the comprehensive plant conservation information system.

Capacity Building and Training

BGCI builds capacity for plant conservation through best practice training, workshops, and resources; strengthening regional networks of technical expertise; and organizing international conferences for knowledge exchange. The BGCI Directory of Expertise connects experts in plant conservation globally, while the Conservation Action Tracker provides information on conservation actions for tree species.

Working in conjunction with the GlobalTree Portal and other data tools, BGCI’s databases and services provide powerful resources to prioritise, connect, manage, monitor and build capacity for ex situ and in situ conservation efforts at local, regional and global scales.
