Botanic Gardens of Sydney
Organisational Overview
The Botanic Gardens of Sydney is the registered business name of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, a statutory body constituted under the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust Act 1980 (NSW). It manages four significant green spaces in Sydney and is dedicated to advancing botanical science, conservation, and public education, overseeing more than $1.2 billion in state significant cultural, heritage, and botanical collections.
The organisation encompasses three world-leading botanic gardens, Australia’s premier botanical research institute, and one of the country’s most loved urban parklands: the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney (Australia’s oldest scientific institution and a major international tourist attraction), the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan (416 hectares in South West Sydney and the flagship campus of the Australian Institute of Botanical Science), the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah (Australia’s highest cool-climate botanic garden within the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area), and The Domain Sydney (Sydney’s leading outdoor live entertainment and activation precinct).
Australia is home to approximately 24,000 plant species, 87 per cent of which are endemic. An estimated 2,000 species in the ecosystem remain to be discovered and documented. Amid climate change, habitat loss, and the extinction crisis, the Botanic Gardens of Sydney fights to conserve plant species and protect all life that depends on them.
Science and Research
The Australian Institute of Botanical Science is Australia’s premier botanical research institute, encompassing the education, science, conservation, and collections of the Botanic Gardens of Sydney. It brings together people, physical and virtual scientific collections, research, services, and facilities to discover, understand, and protect plants.
The Institute’s critical work is supported by the National Herbarium of New South Wales (housing extensive plant specimens), the Australian PlantBank (dedicated to the ex situ conservation of native plant genetic resources), the Daniel Solander Library (botanical literature and historical archives), the living collections, and the horticulture, science, education and conservation teams.
The Botanic Gardens of Sydney works with First Nations peoples to preserve local habitats, decolonise collections, and develop sustainable land management practices. The Institute increasingly focuses on Australian biodiversity research, showcasing more native plants in the Gardens, and integrating Aboriginal knowledge and heritage into visitor experiences.
Garden Highlights
The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney occupies 30 hectares on the shores of Sydney Harbour, adjacent to the Sydney Opera House. Founded in 1816 by Governor Macquarie and opened to the public in 1831, it is Australia’s oldest scientific institution and one of the country’s most visited international tourist attractions. The Garden features themed areas including rare and threatened plants of the world and a romantic rose garden, showcasing the diverse beauty of nature. Guided experiences include the Aboriginal Heritage Tour and free guided walks.
The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is Australia’s largest botanic garden, collecting and displaying a wide variety of Australian flora. The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah, at elevated altitude, supports unique cool-climate rainforest and alpine plant communities within the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
Vision and Values
The Botanic Gardens of Sydney envisions a fair and sustainable world where people, communities, and institutions are informed, inspired, and motivated to recognise the power of plants and support their conservation. Its mission is to advance science, offer solutions to critical environmental challenges, and improve quality of life through joyous connections to the Gardens.
The organisation’s four core values guide everything it does: Passion and Excellence — dedication to botanical science and horticulture; Culture and Science — integrating thousands of years of First Nations knowledge in plant taxonomy, ecology, and ecosystem engineering with modern scientific perspectives; Connection and Inclusion — welcoming everyone to discover the joy of plants; and Sustainability — safeguarding the future of the planet for generations to come.
