协会概况
美国加利福尼亚花园和园林历史协会(California Garden & Landscape History Society,CGLHS)是一家501(c)(3)非营利会员组织,致力于促进人们对加州历史花园与景观的了解、保护和修复工作。协会成员涵盖景观建筑师、学者、花园管理者、设计师、历史学家、文物保护者、作家、图书馆员、教育工作者、政府专业人士,以及热情的园艺爱好者,是一个跨学科的专业团体。
创会历史
协会由威廉·A·(比尔)·格兰特(William A. “Bill” Grant,1925-2020)于1995年创立。格兰特召集了首次两次组织会议,随后与参会成员共同创立了协会。此后协会快速发展,成员已扩展至来自多个州和不同大陆的代表。协会成立次年(1996年5月)即创办了旗舰期刊《Eden》。
学术期刊《Eden》
《Eden》是协会的季度学术期刊,每期刊载关于加州花园与景观历史原创研究的论文、最新的相关书评,以及全州各地文物保护工作的动态资讯。期刊自1996年创刊以来,已积累了大量关于加州园艺史和景观史的珍贵文献。过往期刊可从协会网站免费下载。
会议与活动

Society Overview
The California Garden & Landscape History Society (CGLHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization dedicated to promoting wider knowledge, preservation, and restoration of California’s historic gardens and landscapes. The society brings together an interdisciplinary community including landscape architects, scholars, garden directors, designers, historians, preservationists, writers, librarians, educators, government professionals, and passionate gardeners and plant lovers.
Founding History
The society was founded in 1995 by William A. “Bill” Grant (1925-2020), who convened the first two organizational meetings and brought together fellow enthusiasts to establish the organization. The society grew quickly, attracting members from multiple states and continents. Just a year after founding, the first issue of its flagship journal Eden was published in May 1996.
Eden Journal
Eden is the society’s quarterly academic journal featuring articles based on original research into California’s garden and landscape history, book reviews, and news about preservation efforts throughout the state. The journal has accumulated a wealth of valuable documentation on California’s horticultural and landscape history since its inception in 1996. Past issues are available for free download from the society’s website.
Conferences and Events
Since its founding, the society has held annual meetings and conferences along with other events. Topics have ranged from the rich contributions of Japanese garden design to the diverse California landscape and the long history of the Sonoma County nursery industry. The society also organizes regular garden visits and member gatherings, providing opportunities for face-to-face learning and networking.
Recent Publications
The society recently published California Eden: Heritage Landscapes of the Golden State, co-edited by Christine Edstrom O’Hara and Susan Chamberlin. The book features 22 selected essays from past issues of Eden, freshly edited and published in full color by Angel City Press at the Los Angeles Public Library. The society also provides various academic resources including the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS), plant materials, and Italian Garden Bibliography.
