Fleuroselect

Fleuroselect

About Fleuroselect

Fleuroselect is the international organisation for the ornamental plants industry, founded on 29 May 1970 at the first convention in Frankfurt, Germany, with S.N. Groot as President, J. Ohlsen as Treasurer and R. Troost of the Dutch Seed Trade Association as Secretary. It is a non-profit body, and it began modestly: founding members each put forward an interest-free loan, and a mutual gentlemen’s agreement between breeders served as protection, with new varieties publicised through gold, silver and bronze medals. More than fifty years on the work is much the same — test new pot and bedding plants, promote the winners, protect member varieties, and move the industry forward.

How It Is Run

A board elected by the membership sets strategy, with two members appointed from each business unit; the President is chosen at the annual general meeting and the Board appoints the Treasurer. Technical committees advise on the trials and contests, and a small secretariat in Voorhout, the Netherlands, handles day-to-day running and promotion.

There are four business units. Home Gardening promotes home gardening as fun and worthwhile and runs an annual conference each September in a different city. Breeders meets annually in December for the Breeders and Young Plant Producers Conference. Production & Distribution conducts a biennial survey of cutting and seedling sales across major European markets, covering more than 35 bedding crops so participants can compare market size with their own volume. The organisation is funded by membership contributions, trial and novelty protection fees, and royalties on awarded varieties; enforcement work, market surveys and conferences pay for themselves.

Gold Medal and Novelty Protection

Members may enter their newest varieties into the Gold Medal and Approved Novelty trials, where independent expert judges compare entries against existing varieties on innovation, practical use, floriferousness and garden performance. Novelty status protects a variety from unlicensed propagation. The Gold Medal is the demanding one: entries are trialed across ten to fifteen independent European sites over a full growing season and benchmarked against the best varieties already in commerce, which is why it is often called the European all-star for new flowers. The first true Gold Medal went to Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ from W. Atlee Burpee in 1989, after which the silver and bronze awards were dropped.

FleuroStar and the Display Gardens

FleuroStar judges something different — the wow factor. It is awarded each year during FlowerTrials in week 24 in the Netherlands and Germany, where more than thirty experts from breeding, young plant production, growing, retail, trade press and marketing score entries on visual impact at the point of sale and commercial potential. Recent winners include Dahlia ‘Dalina® Maxi Noir Velvet Crush’ (2026/27), Digitalis ‘Hanabee F1 White’ (2025/26) and ‘Dalina® Maxi Starburst Pink’ (2024/25), while Gold Medal winners include Zinnia ‘Profusion Double White Improved’, Verbena ‘Flair’ and Helianthus ‘Always Sunny Gold’. Winning varieties are grown and displayed in public gardens across Europe, the US and Asia.

The FlowerTrials foundation was incorporated into Fleuroselect and dissolved, with exhibiting breeders outside the membership given a special status. The secretariat liaises with breeders, handles finances and runs promotion including advertising, PR, trade fairs, mailings and social media.

Protection and Membership

Protection work runs year-round. Working with Royalty Administration International, Fleuroselect organises annual campaigns to detect illegal propagation of protected varieties in several countries, carrying out random audits on growers to check production against quantities ordered; the first enforcement was a Petunia project in 1999. FleuroProtect, set up in 1998 for this work, was disbanded in 2002 and its members taken into Fleuroselect.

Membership now numbers around seventy-five pot and bedding plant breeders, producers and distributors, mostly European but also from Japan, the US, China and Thailand. The roll includes Sakata, Takii Europe, Syngenta Flowers, PanAmerican Seed, Benary, Dümmen Orange, Volmary, Selecta One and Suntory Flowers Europe, alongside Chinese firms such as Beijing FloriBreeders Seeds, Shanghai Yuanyi Seedling and Xiamen Ican Seed. Fleuroselect also names a Plant of the Year each year — Begonia and pea in 2025, ornamental grasses and radish in 2026 — and held its 55th annual convention in July 2026.
