History and Governance
The Deutsche Dahlien-, Fuchsien- und Gladiolen-Gesellschaft e.V. (DDFGG) is one of the oldest German-language societies devoted to dahlias, fuchsias and gladioli, alongside related container and bedding plants. Founded in 1897 as the Deutsche Dahlien-Gesellschaft by a group of dahlia enthusiasts in Germany and registered as an eingetragener Verein (e.V.), it has worked for more than a century to bring together hobby growers, breeders, nurseries and public-sector gardeners around Dahlien, Fuchsien, Gladiolen, Brugmansien (Engelstrompeten), Pelargonien and the broader category of frost-tender Kübelpflanzen. Today it counts members throughout Germany and in neighbouring German-speaking countries, structured into four Fachgruppen and operating under the Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde umbrella since 2023.
Fachgruppen, Events and Annual Conference
Four standing Fachgruppen cover the society’s main plant groups: Dahlien, Fuchsien, Kübelpflanzen (which includes Brugmansien and Pelargonien) and Gladiolen. Each group maintains its own variety registers, cultivation notes and judging activities. The society’s flagship event is the three- to four-day Jahrestagung, traditionally scheduled alongside a Bundesgartenschau (BUGA) or a Versuchs- und Prüfungsgarten, and built around guided garden tours, variety judging and informal exchange between breeders and hobby growers. Regional groups complement the annual conference with smaller Dahlien- and Fuchsien-tage in spring and autumn.
Publications and Public Databases
The society runs three publishing streams: a monthly electronic Rundbrief that reports on Fachgruppe activities, current events and cultivation questions; a monthly Kübelpflanzenportrait that profiles one frost-tender container plant in depth; and a printed Jahrbuch sent to members at year-end, compiling the year’s judging results, cultivation notes and cultural history of Dahlien, Fuchsien, Gladiolen, Brugmansien, Pelargonien and Kübelpflanzen. Two databases remain freely accessible on the website to all visitors: the Fuchsiensortenverzeichnis (fuchsia variety register) and the Kübelpflanzenverzeichnis (container-plant register), both built up over many years of voluntary work.
Members, Judging and External Links
Membership spans the full breadth of dahlia, fuchsia and gladiolus interest: window-sill hobbyists, greenhouse collectors, professional breeders, commercial nurseries, municipal gardeners and botanists. This cross-section is widely seen as one of the society’s defining features and a reason it has lasted more than a century. The Dahlien- and Fuchsien-Neuheitenprämierung held during the Jahrestagung is regarded as one of the most authoritative German-language awards for new varieties, and winning entries typically enter the society’s cultivation-recommendation list. The society maintains long-standing contacts with the Royal Horticultural Society, the American Dahlia Society and bulb-oriented societies in neighbouring European countries.
Recent Changes: Merger into the GdS
Around 2023 the society underwent a major organisational change: its Dahlien and Fuchsien/Kübelpflanzen Fachgruppen were incorporated as independent Fachgruppen of the Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde (GdS), a larger German perennial-plant society founded in 1950 with around 5,800 members, 39 regional groups and 17 Fachgruppen. The main ddfgg.de content has since migrated to the corresponding GdS Fachgruppenseiten. The Fuchsiensortenverzeichnis and Kübelpflanzenverzeichnis databases continue to be maintained by the new Fachgruppen, and members receive Rundbrief, yearbook and Jahrestagung access under the GdS umbrella. The DDFGG legal entity formally remains in place, but day-to-day operations are now carried by the GdS — the first system-level merger in the society’s 126-year history.
