Park Overview

The University of Guelph Arboretum is located adjacent to the University of Guelph campus in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1970, the arboretum covers 400 acres and features plant collections, gardens, walking trails, natural woodlands, wetlands, and meadows, housing more than 1,700 different taxa of woody plants. As a university-affiliated academic institution, the arboretum serves as a “living laboratory,” providing educational support for undergraduate courses and research resources for researchers at all levels.

Plant Collections

The arboretum has established multiple themed collection systems centered on Ontario’s native woody plants, including a comprehensive World of Trees display, a dedicated Native Trees of Ontario section, and specialized collections of Oaks, Beeches, Maples, and Conifers. Additionally, the arboretum operates the Rare Woody Plants of Ontario program, maintaining living gene banks to conserve endangered trees and shrubs native to the province.

Research and Conservation

The University of Guelph Arboretum prioritizes the conservation of woody plants native to Ontario. Its signature Elm Recovery Project breeds genetically diverse, Ontario-sourced American Elm populations tolerant of Dutch Elm Disease. Other major initiatives include Red Mulberry Conservation, Plant Propagation research, Seed Collection preservation, and the long-term Ontario Tree Atlas monitoring program. The arboretum is accredited by BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conservation International) and ArbNet (International Arboretum Network) at Level 4, the highest level of certification.

Public Engagement

The arboretum hosts dozens of workshops and public programs annually, including botanical sketching, plein air watercolour painting, stargazing events, and Trees and Books walks, while also offering venue rentals. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk, with buildings accessible on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors can use the interactive Arboretum Explorer tool to locate specific tree species and plan their visit.
